So ... 5000 words from Shelden about what a poopy-head Beckett is. 1000 words from Joan about Big.Small.All. A new thread about a Republican Icon. A thread declaring the word diversity really means racism. On and on and on ...

Are you sure you kids don't want to get *one* moderate-liberal writer? Please? It would make things much more interesting and maybe even fun?

Come on! You know you want to! ;)

i think you should ask ben grosser. he's smart, liberal, and really nice. he won't throw f-bombs or anything else at people who disagree with him. you should ask him.

Great, Bush wants to send 20,000 more troops to Iraq in another push for "victory." Guess the message the electorate was sending flew past the White House.
If we're still bogged down in Iraq in two years, the Republican Party is on its way to becoming a permanent minority party.

Kansas lost to Oral Roberts last night.

Too many ironies to even list, but you guys go ahead...

How about getting Bruce to recruit for us when he gets the "pink" slip removing him from his 'dream job'.

Too many ironies to even list, but you guys go ahead”¦

Sorry, I'm still laughing too hard.

FWIW, the UCIMC is working on more transparent and consistent approaches to site editing. At this point, there are four people who serve as editors on the site, and decisions have been a matter of individual judgment. We sometimes do have to hide posts; for example, stuff about private citizens can be a problem since they have a higher right to privacy than public figures (e.g., elected officials).

There was some recent discussion about open threads on UCIMC. We don't really have open threads per se, but we do have an open newswire. If you want to publish something, just come over to http://www.ucimc.org and select "publish." People are strongly encouraged to register first, though. (We don't care who you are IRL, but some kind of consistent identity helps.)

This thread is really funny.

"Hi, we're from IMC/Wobblies/Progressive/etc. and we're here to help you become more tolerant at Illini Pundit. Now we don't tolerate open posting at IMC and we censor the hell (oops, meant edit) out of posts for various and sundry reasons, but that's because we progressives are for truth, justice, and the amerikkkan way. So let us exercise free speech and tell you who should post, the subjects of which you should post, and the etiquette for posting, i.e., what we say is truth and beauty and what you unethical, corporate, fascist, neo-con, lackey theocrats post is nothing but sexist, homophobic, racist ad hominem attacks on the masses."

Waaaay to funny..........

Waaaay too funny......

Um, actually we DO have open posting. However, we generally don't have "Open Thread" posts like Illinipundit does. As far as your site, I recognize that you can post whatever you want, and I'm not going to try to tell you what your editorial policies should be. That's the decision of whoever is paying for Illinipundit. However, there were some posts about UCIMC, and as one of the UCIMC editors, I'm responding.

i have had posts hidden at UCIMC several times. i wasn't name calling or using foul language. so i quit trying

One of the other editors and I are pushing for a less zealous approach to removing posts and a clearer definition of what acceptable behavior means. Realistically, there are certain kinds of posts that both Illinipundit and UCIMC have to remove (e.g., harassment), but people should be allowed to express opposing points of view.

this was before your time, perhaps, wayward.

there was a troll named jack ryan and a mini-debate about banning him.
one message i wrote which was deleted was a mention of John Milton and "Areopagitica," which I have probably just misspelled. he said good ideaas drive out bad ideas in a feee marketplace of ideas
a couple other posts were defenses of free speech, not in support of jack ryan, but the ideal of exchanging ideas

Yeah, I was aware of Jack Ryan, but less concerned about him than one of the other editors may have been. I did delete some of the more invidious posts, but wasn't convinced that every right-wing post came from him. Ultimately, I concluded that we should look only at a post's content; trying to guess the author was a fool's errand. Right-wing posts on UCIMC don't really bother me, but I'd like to see us provide a setting where people (on both sides) can express their opinions without worrying about being attacked. I realize that this doesn't mean, "Users should be able to say whatever pops into their heads without checking facts, and expect that nobody will disagree with them." But trolls do disrupt online communities, and can even destroy them. The challenge will be balancing our ability to survive with the goal of supporting freedom of expression.

Uh ... this site has refused to publish a bunch of comments from a variety of posters, and not just because of swearing or harassment. Yesterday I was called an embarassment to my family, and a fool. Another poster was called a mental invalid. None of these posts (by conservative commenters) were erased. This morning I entered a very unoffensive post about Guiliani's police, and the various minorities they have killed. No harassment, no name calling. The post is gone.

I'd stop calling the kettle black whenever you're ready.

let's call for freedom of speech no maater what the site

"This morning I entered a very unoffensive post about Guiliani's police, and the various minorities they have killed. No harassment, no name calling. The post is gone."

I've been clearing out spam all day, and it's entirely possible that I accidentally deleted it with stuff that was caught in the spam-catcher. We're getting 500-1000 spam posts a day to sort through, it's tough to wade through them all quickly, and sometimes I'll miss something.

But no one here is intentionally trying to censor your posts. Frankly, the stuff you write just isn't offensive enough to be worth the trouble.

I think part of the problem might be that the spam catcher thinks your handle ("Just call me "Anonymous"") is somehow spam-conducive. You may want to try something that doesn't include the word "Anonymous" or doesn't include quotes. But that's just a guess. I have no idea how the Akismet anti-spam stuff works. I just know that 99.9% of the spam we get is caught by it.

Gordy, have you thought of using the Captcha stuff? The UCIMC site was getting a similar level of spam, and changing our software really reduced the problem. We also save IPs of known spambots and set up our server to ignore them.

Thanks for the tip, wayward.

IP and UCIMC hand in hand, a rare sight

"IP and UCIMC hand in hand, a rare sight"

It doesn't need to be. It's not like any of our authors bear any animosity towards IMC, and we're not in competition with each other. I know that I could use all the help I can get. The CPU errors are frustrating the crap out of me.

"Another poster was called a mental invalid. None of these posts (by conservative commenters) were erased."

Actually, I believe Jonah Goldberg was called a mental invalid by a liberal poster. My thread - not deleted.

Actually, I'm not really a sysadmin but I've noticed that spam can claim a lot of bandwidth and CPU time. I'd guess that by this point, both UCIMC and IP have more animosity toward spammers than toward each other. Since your site is apparently hosted on someone else's machine, I'm not sure what exactly your options are. Completely blocking known spambot IPs might save you some trouble. We also had some trouble that appeared to be related to the previous software that we were running - maybe something about threads or cookies? Getting rid of that helped a lot - we ended up using a free open-source solution based on Drupal.

Thanks again for the ideas.

All the horrible things that I would never dream of doing to another human being: I would happily do to spammers.

First, let me clarify that I really don't care if I am censored. It bothers me a little if a thread refuses to allow any of my comments at all, but a healthy censorship once in a while is fine. I wasn't complaining in the above comment, just mentioning a fact. Censor me at will ... it's your blog.

As for the "mental invalid" comment, it was Banembek (or whatever his name is) who wrote:

The next time black kids get harassed on Bradley just because they're black, reasonable people who would care are less likely to notice because they don't have time to discern the difference between childish retorts from mental invalids and legitimate complaints.

I doubt he was referring to Goldberg. Later he and Bramfield began calling me "sheets" and other fun stuff. Again, I really don't care (actually find it kind of amusing :) ) as long as there isn't a double standard.

Cheers! :)

[John Bramfeld:  I don't remember calling you "sheets" or any other "fun stuff."  Perhaps you were thinking of this entry of yours: "Hey John, you know where you can stick your can don'tcha? Pull that corncob out first, eh? "

I believe this was in response to me calling you a teacher.

There's no double-standard. There's no standard, period - every author is free to do whatever they like in their own threads.

That said, I'm 99.9% sure that if you're losing comments, it's because they're somehow being picked up by the anti-spam software. I say that because I know the authors are very, very reluctant to delete posts for any reason, even those posts that clearly deserve deletion.

To be fair, UCIMC was in the same position with post deletion and massive spam before we changed. We'd get hundreds of junk posts every day, and even though we tried to be careful, we probably accidentally deleted some legitimate posts.

JCMA,

"this site has refused to publish a bunch of comments from a variety of posters, and not just because of swearing or harassment."
- Considering that RSW was called a closet racist in the very first comment of that thread: "Spoken line a true closet racist.", and it was never removed contradicts your claim of intentional or one-sided censorship.

Xian posted:

"Just be careful, Jonah Goldberg is certainly a “mental invalid” when it comes to an understanding of issues of race."

that is to what I was referring - I missed the earlier use of the term by JB.

RSWB, that's really bad, I hope you are just making an honest mistake:

I replied to and quoted John:
Because that's the only defense you can voice for affirmative action? Calling people racists”¦ Every time you do that, you commit the intellectual equivalent of a lynching. No one believes racism exists anymore because people use it as bomb-throwing in a debate to shut down debate. It's called crying wolf. The next time black kids get harassed on Bradley just because they're black, reasonable people who would care are less likely to notice because they don't have time to discern the difference between childish retorts from mental invalids and legitimate complaints.

I responded teasing John for his use of the term:
Just be careful, Jonah Goldberg is certainly a “mental invalid” when it comes to an understanding of issues of race. His arguments are lacking the nuances that an elementary understanding of such issues would grant him. Don't you think that there are many of us who are slapping our heads at his idiocy?

I placed it in quotes, and said "Just be careful" meaning "I can't believe that you used this term". Then I demonstrated how Goldberg can look like an idiot if you view him from a different perspective.

It was beyond low for you to misconstrue my statement and attack it for using a term that I despise and was attacking the use of in the first place.

You are usually a very polite, cordial person, so I assume that this must have been a simple misunderstanding. I can't make you do anything, but it would be a class move at this stage to apologize.

And I will gladly apologize for messing up the font of the thread :(

I truly did miss your reference - I saw the quotes but breezed thru the JB post too fast to notice it in there. I have gathered from earlier writings that you don't much care much for Mr. Goldberg, so I didn't think it was a huge stretch that you think he's a mental invalid in the area of race.

My apologies for my misread.

and thanks for considering me usually cordial and polite - I do try
