There was a story this weekend in local media which demonstrates why I believe party affiliations in local government SUCKS.
It was about the continued delay by CC Board Chair Wysocki in putting forth canidates for the Champaign Southwest MTD board. She has really not done her job since the voters approved this organization eight months ago in the March at the Primary election.
The story focused on the probability of there being a different CC Board Chair which would add further delays.
Here is my point: A petition signed by over a 1,000 voters to put the creation of the CS MTD on the ballot, followed by an overwhelming majority of the residents voting YES to form the District takes eight months, yet the Champaign County Board CANNOT even appoint a Board in the SAME AMOUT OF TIME.
???????????????WHY?????????
BECAUSE OF PARTISEN POLITICS? Maybe
TOO BUSY INGNORING MOLD ISSUES? Maybe
EXPENDING TOO MUCH TIME GETTING RE-ELECTED? Maybe
INABILITY OF CC BOARD MEMBERS TO PERFORM THEIR JOBS? Maybe
PRESSURE TO HOLD UP THE APPOINTMENTS FROM THE CHAMPAIGN URBANA MTD? Maybe
ALL OF THE ABOVE? Maybe-------Did I miss any other reasons for the delay?

one more maybe - the creation fo the district was all that was really wanted by the organizers? You don't need a board to run an MTD that really wasn't supposed to do anything, so really no rush.

At the very least, Beckett will be done as vice-chair and (most likely) facilities chair.

RSW---Illinois law says there is not District without a board. Oh and by the way it has to have Board members of political parties which reflect the Champaign County Board. The same is true for all Boards whether they be Water, Air, Mass Transit, Planning etc.---all Board members have to relect the political parties represented on the county board.
So besides being the political corruption 'petri dish', Illinois is the most politically inept.

It will be interesting to see if Tony Fabri can convince three Republicans to support him for board chairman.

lv, I need a refresher as to where this issue is at in the courts. Can CUMTD still annex and levy taxes on people in this new MTD?

RSW---BRIEF REFRESHER: About a month after the citizens petitioned to setup there own MTD with court approval, the CU MTD had a public hearing on annexing the SW Champaign area. Obviously, the public were overwhelmingly against the annexation, but the CU MTD annexed the area two days later. They could do that since the 'public' hearing is non-binding just required by law. The judge was asked to negate the 'forced' annexation but he said there was no conflicts until after the voters approved a new mass transit district and it was setup i.e. Champaign County appointed a governing Board. Once that was done the judge would consider the conflicting areas between the Champaign Urbana Mass Transit District and the Champaign Southwest Mass Transit District.
Currently CU MTD has all of the area under their taxation which will be part of the new MTD.

At least Claudia Gross won't be vice chair. She can't seem to make a comment at the meetings unless it's filled with invective.

Ok LV, so there is not a conflict until the SWMTD has a board and is functioning. I'd love to hear Tapley's insight then - what is the holdup?
