Champaign Objections

The News-Gazette covers the Champaign City petition objections here.

The objections will be heard by the three-member city electoral board, which includes Schweighart; Michael La Due, the longest-serving city council member; and City Clerk Marilyn Banks.

In the cases involving Schweighart and Mingee, Tom Bruno, the second-longest-serving council member, would replace Schweighart on the board.

A hearing on the objections is likely to be held early next week, said City Attorney Fred Stavins.

I'm attaching a copy of the objections - I FOIA'd them this afternoon for you to peruse.  I'm also attaching most of the relevant petitions - every one except Mingee's.   (You need to view the full post to see the attachments)

And here is the procedure going forward, from a City of Champaign email:

The initial meeting of the City of Champaign Electoral Board is tentatively scheduled to commence on Tuesday, January 2, 2007.  Some of the objectors cases are scheduled for 1:30 p.m. and others for 2:30 p.m.

The initial meeting will take place in the City of Champaign Council Chambers, 102 N. Neil Street, Champaign, Illinois.  At the initial meeting, each case will be called and certain procedural matters will be dealt with.

After procedural and miscellaneous matters are dealt with, the matters will be adjourned to times commencing on Friday, January 5, 2007, or a later date, at a time to be assigned by the hearing body.

It is imperative that you come to the City Attorney's Office, 5th Floor, 102 N. Neil Street, Champaign, Illinois on Friday, December 29, 2006 between 1:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. to:

    1.  Pick up materials relative to the hearing.
    2.  Sign a waiver of service form (so we do not have to incur the time and expense of serving the papers by the Sheriff).
    3.  Sign a consent form to have the hearings conducted in the City Council Chambers rather than the Courthouse.

Your cooperation in these procedural matters will assist the Board in conducting orderly proceedings.

If you have questions concerning these matters, please call our office at 403-8765 or request your attorney to do so.

I think Mark Shelden is going to post something in the next day or so explaining some of the technical aspects, so I'll leave that to him.

unregistered voters is a pretty tough one to get around - Jerry may go unchallenged after all.

Mingee will be off the ballot THIS way, but he, or anyone for that matter can announce and follow the procedures to be a write in. The 2 top vote getters, Jerry and the write in with the most votes, one vote if there is only one write in declared, go to the general municipal in March.

And Marci can still be challenged, too.

The Consolidated General Election is April 17, 2007.

If Mingee is not allowed on the ballot due to his petition defects, I'm not sure that he is eligible to then be a write-in for the same office for which he is kept off the ballot. Maybe he can since he will be a write in for election as opposed to nomination, but it looks bad for him either way.

Besides, as far as I can tell, it seems that his best asset for being Mayor is he knows intimately how our courts and jail work.

The way I read it is, To force a primary a candidate would have to file by today (61 dyas before the election) as a write-in to force a primary for that office.

Check out the signatures on lines 14 and 15 of sheet two of the Henley petition. They say when a couple has been married long enough they begin to resemble each other...

The addresses look a like but the signatures are different. The "ple" are completely different some are closed loop and some are not.   The “e” starts at the top in Tammy Tapley, Scotts “e” is just a loop from the bottom.
