Unit 4 Charter School

Tonight the Unit 4 School Board will decide whether to approve a charter school concept for boys. It is a worthwhile and laudable proposal but one that should be rejected at this time. Forming a charter school is (and should be) a tough road that takes many months to put together.

Last month, teacher Andrea Carter provided the barest of budget numbers and couldn’t adequately answer many crucial facts. Her main argument was that it worked in Ohio where she came from a few years ago, so just trust her. Unfortunately, Carter’s numbers were unrealistic and ill-informed.

My hero is Arlene Blank. Last month she was assailed for having the audacity to ask straightforward questions about curriculum, funding and the teaching pool.

Whatever they decide tonight, I certainly hope the school board doesn’t allow the same disrespect from Ms. Carter (and others from the public) that was shown at the last meeting. What kind of example do we demonstrate to our students when we tacitly condone swearing, yelling and overtly disrespectful attitudes at school board members?
