Live-Blogging Champaign Primary Election

If everything works out OK, I'll be at Brookens tonight, live-blogging the Champaign City Council Primary election results.  (Hopefully the site cooperates and doesn't strain too badly under the traffic. I may have to take some drastic measures for the evening, but I promise I'm working on a long-term solution.)

You'll also be able to find results, sometimes faster than we get them at Brookens, on County Clerk Mark Shelden's website.

And, of course, the good people who run the County don't see fit to allow measly taxpayers to use the wireless Internet access at Brookens, even though we're the ones paying for it, so my access will be Treo-based, and thus unreliable.

UPDATE:  I won't be at Brookens tonight, as Real Life has intervened.  But I'll still try to blog the results if I can get Internet access.

UPDATE - 7:55 PM:  I'm looking here for results, but there aren't any yet.  Anybody know what happened with the Unit 4 Petition objections hearing this evening?

UPDATE - 8:25 PM:  No results online yet.

UPDATE - 8:45 PM:  With 10 of 40 precincts reporting:

  1. Deborah Frank Feinen.  .  .  .  .  .  .       354   16.75
  2. Patricia A. Avery.  .  .  .  .  .  .  .       319   15.09
  3. Thomas A. "Tom" Bruno  .  .  .  .  .  .       311   14.71
  4. Giraldo Rosales  .  .  .  .  .  .  .  .       293   13.86
  5. Karen B. Foster  .  .  .  .  .  .  .  .       285   13.48
  6. Annette B. Williams .  .  .  .  .  .  .       190    8.99
  7. Bill Glithero .  .  .  .  .  .  .  .  .       155    7.33
  8. Michael Henley.  .  .  .  .  .  .  .  .       150    7.10
  9. Freddie Gordon.  .  .  .  .  .  .  .  .        55    2.60

UPDATE - 9:00 PM: Looking at that initial batch of precincts (Champaign 2, CC 1, 4, 5, 8, 9, 11, 12, 19 & 21) - I think most people would say that batch of precincts, as a whole, leans clearly Democratic.  None of those are south of Kirby, for example.  In those precincts in 2006, Tim Johnson got 2,206 votes and David Gill got 2,846 votes.  Gill won those precincts 58 to 42 percent.

UPDATE - 9:11 PM:  Another 12 precincts are in, and now:

  1. Deborah Frank Feinen.  .  .  .  .  .  .     1,027   18.40
  2. Thomas A. "Tom" Bruno  .  .  .  .  .  .       908   16.27
  3. Karen B. Foster  .  .  .  .  .  .  .  .       834   14.94
  4. Patricia A. Avery.  .  .  .  .  .  .  .       713   12.78
  5. Giraldo Rosales  .  .  .  .  .  .  .  .       696   12.47
  6. Annette B. Williams .  .  .  .  .  .  .       469    8.40
  7. Michael Henley.  .  .  .  .  .  .  .  .       414    7.42
  8. Bill Glithero .  .  .  .  .  .  .  .  .       408    7.31
  9. Freddie Gordon.  .  .  .  .  .  .  .  .       103    1.85

The additional precincts include more Republican precincts, so that explains the big increases for Foster and Henley.  Still not reporting are Champaign 4 and CC 2, 7, 13, 14, 15, 17, 18, 20, 23, 25, 26, 30, 33, 35, 36 & 38.  Off the top of my head, it looks like there are more votes still to be counted in Republican precincts than in Democratic precincts.

UPDATE - 9:50 PM:  Thirty-two of 40 precincts reporting:

  1. Deborah Frank Feinen.  .  .  .  .  .  .     1,564   18.39
  2. Thomas A. "Tom" Bruno  .  .  .  .  .  .     1,416   16.65
  3. Karen B. Foster  .  .  .  .  .  .  .  .     1,266   14.89
  4. Giraldo Rosales  .  .  .  .  .  .  .  .     1,082   12.72
  5. Patricia A. Avery.  .  .  .  .  .  .  .     1,052   12.37
  6. Annette B. Williams .  .  .  .  .  .  .       703    8.27
  7. Michael Henley.  .  .  .  .  .  .  .  .       638    7.50
  8. Bill Glithero .  .  .  .  .  .  .  .  .       628    7.39
  9. Freddie Gordon.  .  .  .  .  .  .  .  .       135    1.59

Still remaining: CC 2, 3, 7, 17, 18, 26, 30 & 35.  I don't think the top three or top six will change.

FINAL UPDATE - 10:10 PM:  Unofficial final results, with all 40 precincts reporting:

  1. Annette B. Williams .  .  .  .  .  .  .       815    8.15
  2. Deborah Frank Feinen.  .  .  .  .  .  .     1,857   18.57
  3. Thomas A. "Tom" Bruno  .  .  .  .  .  .     1,642   16.42
  4. Karen B. Foster  .  .  .  .  .  .  .  .     1,510   15.10
  5. Giraldo Rosales  .  .  .  .  .  .  .  .     1,252   12.52
  6. Patricia A. Avery.  .  .  .  .  .  .  .     1,241   12.41
  7. Michael Henley.  .  .  .  .  .  .  .  .       774    7.74
  8. Bill Glithero .  .  .  .  .  .  .  .  .       728    7.28
  9. Freddie Gordon.  .  .  .  .  .  .  .  .       157    1.57

Top six advance to the April 17 General Election, and will be listed on the ballot in the order in which they finished here.  Henley, Glithero and Gordon do not advance.

This post is now un-stickied.

Congratulations to Deb, Tom, Karen, Patricia, Annette, and Giraldo. My condolences to the people that didn't win I know it’s allot of hard work.
Giraldo are you living in Champaign yet? The voters will want to know.

really low turnout---they said 6.x% on TV.  i think the ordering may change significantly with the larger turnout we'll see in the general.  of course plenty of campaigning between now and then will have an effect as well.

Even with the low turnout, the top three made quite a statement.  I think it looks good. I'm really rather surprised that Avery/Rosales was so tight.

How are the raw totals and percentage totals the same?

So to whom do the Henley and Glithero votes go on April 17?

What effect will Melodye Rosales' race for school board have on who votes April 17?

Who gets the support of Jim Cross, Eric Meyer and GT Sellers on April 17? Assuming they advance both of their favored candidates, Feinen and Foster, who else will the bar owners want to see in office?

Note that its:
3 Republicans/3 Democrats;
3 White/3Black;
3 Incumbents/3Challengers
2 Pro-Smoke/4 Clean Air

My guess is:
Feinen
Foster
Rosales

I think Pat/Giraldo ran together I thought they would do better than they did. I was wondering if the Dem's would put on a big push for them. The fact they are both incumbents and neither were leading vote getters shows real weakness. Deb and Karen did well I wasn't to surprised with Deb she is just a good public servant even though I don't agree with her on issue's that aren't local issues. I think the Business/individual rights issues showed up in Karen’s race and Deb's. Tom won because he has been there and has name recognition and he ran radio. I really don't think things will change in the general.

"Note that its:

Who are the three African-Americans?

Just remember... "Real Life" is temporary... blogging is forever! (yes, that was facetious)

Talking to one of the downtown Champaign bar regulars about the election he mentioned that he voted for all four candidates on the CU-PUFF cards that were distributed around the bars.  I wasn't certain but it seemed to me like that would be a spoiled ballot.  I wonder if there was a lot of that from people voting off the CU-PUFF cards who, like in this case, rarely if ever voted before and did not realize they might be spoiling their ballots.

Glock,

If you go here you'll find there were only 4 over votes.

I can't say I'm that terribly surprised by any of the results...except for Foster edging out Rosales. I think folks against the smoking ban should spend the next two months campaigning against Rosales and not Bruno. Bruno's not going to get beat, tonight showed Rosales can very much be beaten.

Handy Smurf's picture

Total . . . . . . . . . 9,998

That explains the parallel percentages.

Well if you beat Bruno you get Rosales or Avery. Then you get Township bailout, Section 8 as a protected class, Police Review Board, Rental Registration.

If the Independent Media Center crowd continues the heavy involvement in this race that they have had up to now, we could get both Rosales and Avery. And then we are all screwed.

And I suppose if this becomes a purely party race we could conceivably see Williams numbers move up in the same range of Rosales and Avery, and then its theoretically possible all three Dems sweep in on an Urbana/IMC/AWARE effort.

I think it's pretty obvious that we need tos upport Deb, Karen, and Bruno. Bruno might be anti-smoking, but the alternatives are Giraldo or Avery or Williams. Other than the smoking ban, Bruno has been very pro-business.

A police review board isn't necessarily a bad thing, as long as you have good, honest, and knowledgable people without an axe to grind on it.  If for nothing else, so members of the police and community can work together and avoid the perception that they aren't trying to enact the community's values.

Now, a police review board can easily run away, and that'd be a bad thing. So I guess it depends on who is on it.

Rosales said.

"The Democrats and the progressives need to step up to the plate," he said. "If they don't take advantage of this opportunity, they're going to lose all the progressives on the city council."

this is in todays New Gazett. When did rosales become progressive. He is the most backwards thinking person in my oppinion. and didnt he vote for dodds because she was a demacrat even though Feinen was more qualified? now he seems suprised that it is a party divided race and those mean republicans took the top 3 spots. how dare they have party support in this non partisan election. I hope he gets voted off. i would rather see Avery on there insted of that man. Dose anyone know if his kids go to Champaign or Urbana Schools?

Turnout was apparently about 7%.  My Champaign 20 was two or three times that, but still low.  I would like to officially thank all of those who didn't vote, they make democracy work.  Here's to people who don't know anything about the election and vote their conscience by staying home.

John

I don't know what Rosales thinks a progressive is--I would guess from his comments he means liberal, although I'm not sure.  What I am sure of is that as an at-large council member, he should be representing all of the City of Champaign, and yet time and time again, he's made public statements that he represents a specific group; he lectures the public on their duties; and in general isn't a very good politician (otherwise he'd live in Champaign and pay his taxes on a timely basis, or file the paperwork on a timely basis).  I seem to recall that when he was elected, the Champaign Firefighters union worked hard to get him elected--I now hear that they no longer support him.  Will they now work to support someone else equally hard so that Champaign doesn't become Urbana lite?  I agree that we need to work hard and support Feinen, Foster and Bruno.  Although I think Bruno spends too much, he generally has well-thought out positions, and he rejected the township's attempt to go around the public and get more money.  Rosales, Pirok, and Jackson would have given Abernathy a blank check.
