Anyone wondering why I'm not excited about the idea of a Fred Thompson Presidential candidacy?
In 1995, the GOP-led House passed a tough medical liability bill that included tort reform as part of the Contract With America. Things were all ready to go in the Senate under Majority Leader Bob Dole, when freshman - and former trial lawyer - Thompson introduced his own medical liability reform bill, sans tort reform. The bill passed and in conference committee the House's tort reform package got completely extirpated. Conservatives were outraged and many blamed Thompson.
Plus, like Sen. McCain, Thompson is a supporter of campaign finance "reform" / free speech restrictions.
Meh.
I'm sticking with Rudy, warts and all, for now.

What?
Judy Baar Topinka was too Conservative for you or something?
Rudy. Who the hell needed the right-wing of the party anyway?!
Gordy, I'm not familiar with Blake Dvorak, but here are a few things of note.
First, I don't know the technicalities between the bill Thompson backed and that which was passed by the House. But since the final version just got 61 votes it's fairly safe to assume that the bill in the House version was DOA in the Senate, Thompson or not. And as to getting signed by Clinton, come on. So if Thompson's compromise made it so the bill passed, more power to him. Plus, it is very likely in my case that i would be more in favor of Thompson's bill than theHouse bill. There have been plenty of Republican sponsored tort reform measures that i have not thought too much of. ($250,000 limit on pain and suffering seems like too low a cap for example)
What I find interesting in this criticism is that it's couched in such generic terms "many blamed Thompson". It's a blog, on line. Maybe just one link to back up that assertion. And is this really the strongest case this guy can make against Thompson's voting record? He's a 86% guy with ACU.
Then this guy comes up with my favorite criticism.
Ouch? How about a big round of applause. Guess what. The political p's and q's in DC among Republicans have been one of our biggest problems. That Thompson didn't play their game doesn't make me upset. It's another reason to vote for him.
Your criticism of his position on McCain Feingold is well taken and well founded. But Giuliani is prochoice, and anti gun, and we haven't even begun to delve into his other issues. On top of that, he's got the personal baggage.
I think I'm pretty conservative, but my primary concern is foreign policy, fiscal policy and then domestic social issues, in that order. I think that Rudy's Pro-Life enough for me, as he's pledged to appoint conservative judges, and to me, that's the beginning and the end of the abortion battle at the Federal level. I think the Federal government is a sigularly bad social engineering device, whether used for conservative or liberal causes. I'll always have a streak of "small-L libertarianism."
Giuliani's gun stance bothers me a lot, frankly.
But to compare him to Topinka? Topinka derided conservatives, and dismissed their support as unnecessary. Giuliani understands that he needs conservative votes, and is campaigning hard to get them, without pandering.
Interesting - Rush has been ranting for an hour about no Republicans sticking up for the right of the President to fire US Attorneys.
The first thing I read this morning on NRO was Fred Thompson, saying just that. Then I heard him say the words filling in for Paul Harvey.
I hadn't heard about Thompson support for McCain-Feingold - that would damage my opinion of him.
Per the Hedgehogreport, as pulled from the recent Thompson interview with Chris Wallace:
I will start by saying that I believe that Fred Thompson is the conservative voice that has been missing so far in this campaign and I hope that he does decide to run (I believe that he will). I wrote a piece on Fred Thompson yesterday on my blog, http://kevinjhunt.blogspot.com/ . I also had the opportunity to listen to Sean Hannity's interview with Fred Thompson last night driving home from a business meeting. I think that if you didn't get the opportunity to hear the interview, you might find it interesting. You can hear the entire interview at www.hannity.com .
Guiliani's first wife was his cousin.
Second cousin, he didn't know it, and it's legal. In other news, Bill Clinton promised to restrict all his affairs to women who are not relatives. I'm sure you feel safer now.
"Guiliani's first wife was his cousin."
Why do you feel some strange compulsion to post this little irrelevant and incorrect tidbit in every thread in which Giuliani is mentioned?
" In other news, Bill Clinton promised to restrict all his affairs to women who are not relatives. I'm sure you feel safer now."
Boy, GOPers sure love to haul out ol' Bill when it's time to sling a good insult. Too bad he isn't actually running for anything. Why not go after Hillary, or are you afraid she will continue to sling it back with increased velocity and mass? What about Barack? Ooo, he smokes. Ooo, he made some questionable stock buys. And you apparently forgot about that shady real estate deal with his buddy Tony Rezko. Obama's not really African-American. He had ghost writers at the Harvard Law Review. His wife slept with Jeffrey Katzenberg. HE slept with Jeffrey Katzenberg.
And why didn't you stand up for Ann Coulter? Wasn't she just telling the truth about John Edwards?
Come on, you guys aren't even trying.

If you think that Republicans are behind any of these stories, you're both really paranoid and really gullible.
"And why didn't you stand up for Ann Coulter? Wasn't she just telling the truth about John Edwards?"
Ann Coulter isn't worth standing up for. She doesn't have the good sense to be embarassed for herself, let alone anyone else.
"Come on, you guys aren't even trying."
Not trying when it comes to Hillary or Barack. No offense, but they're not worth bothering with yet - they have to get their own nomination, first, and we have to get through our own Primary, too.
Second cousin, he didn't know it, and it's legal.
You're slicing the bologna PRETTY thin there, Mark. You guys are all about the sanctity of marriage except when it comes to Republican incest, I guess. Hey, keep it in the family!
That doesn't include second cousins, mostly because there is virtually no increase in birth defects in marriages between second cousins. As to custom, it is quite customary for second cousins to marry around the world and in some faiths here in this country. So as to slicing the bologna thin, I guess I'll stand on the facts and leave the bologna to you.
Sorry, I popped that off when I heard the stupid comment about Giuliani. And Democrats don't deserve the slam because I suppose bringing up the Giuliani marriage could have been done by a Republican.
"If you think that Republicans are behind any of these stories, you're both really paranoid and really gullible."
IP, I thought your sense of humor was far more refined than that. Of course I don't blame Republicans for these stories -- the first three are common knowledge, and the last three I made up.
Re Ann Coulter, I don't think she's capable of feeling embarrassment but I appreciate your comment anyway.
Re Hillary and Barack, you might be right. They're probably spending enough time plotting each other's PR demise.
