See-You Bloggers Happy Hour

When:  Tuesday, April 3
Where:  Memphis On Main.
Who:  IP.com folks and the wider CU Blogging community
Why:  Why not?

Somewhere around the 100th comment on a different topic here, I brought up the idea of declaring an IP.com night at MOM's. I just think it would be fun to have a place and time where we're likely to cross paths with other folks who post here and elsewhere in the local blogosphere.

A few folks have said, "Let's do it." That's enough for me.

Others have asked, "Why limit it to just IP.com?"  Why, indeed? Let's spice up the party by inviting all bloggers from the C-U area!

So I'm declaring next Tuesday from 4-7 as the inaugural launch of See-You Bloggers Happy Hour. If even a few folks drop in and say, "Yeah, let's make this a regular thing," we'll make it a regular thing. If no one shows up--well, I guess I'll figure out it wasn't such a cool idea, after all.

This is a totally informal thing, open to bloggers, commenters, readers, and even trolls.

Please come on down to say hey. It's even O.K. if you don't want to drink alcohol. Your contribution to the lively social exchange is all we're really looking for. Heck, we won't even hold out on the free popcorn.

UPDATE (4/2): This is promising to be a mighty interesting evening, with the distinct possibility of a couple of "Oh, that's you?!" pleasant surprises in the mix. I'm ready to predict a minimum of 10 folks showing up tomorrow night, and it could be upwards of 30 if most of the "maybe's" can make it. Cool.

UPDATE BY IP:  Bumped to the front as a reminder.

I'd love to meet some more of the regulars on here, and in the CU bloggosphere.  I'll be there around 5.

I will be there around 5:30,  I will be the one wearing the mask:)

See-You Bloggers Happy Hour?
Free drinks? Free food?
Or is this just some ploy to try and get customers?

Dont worry about it bud,,,,,,,,we can pass the hat for you>

"Or is this just some ploy to try and get customers?"

They want to take your picture...LOL.

I can carry my own freight, thank you.

Why not have it Buffalo Wild Wings in Savoy? At least there we can smoke.

Because the Queen has extended her invitation to one and all, and since so many on this blog like to comment on her rights as a private business owner, her place is the place to be.  Also they have seating outside for up to 18 people to drink and smoke,as long as they are seated, not standing.  If you have not met her before, and the Duke of Memphis, you will surprised at how nice and charming a couple they really are. They do not sport horns, or even a tail.

"Also they have seating outside for up to 18 people to drink and smoke,as long as they are seated, not standing."

Is that really the rule?  you can't stand, smoke and drink in the outside area?

QueenOfMemphis's picture

"Is that really the rule?  you can't stand, smoke and drink in the outside area?"

That is indeed the rule.  You can stand and smoke--that's O.K. for as many people as will fit on the sidewalk. But in order to drink, you must be seated.

redstatewannabe's picture

Unbelievable!  Well, no, not really.

Hmmm... that'd be kind of fun.  I'm not much of a drinker, but I'm usually willing to buy food to share.

That's a dumb rule. Unless ... you can smoke standing up on a public sidewalk, but can't drink standing up on a public sidewalk. Is it a public sidewalk? If it is, why does Memphis on Main get special treatment? Can I drink on any public sidewalk if I am sitting down?

Forget it. I'm going to BWW where I can sit, stand, drink, smoke, whatever. BWW has good food, too, not just bar food. And free parking.

We shall burn some incense at the loss of you're company.  Outside of course>

For general clarification and edification: the "outdoor cafe" is an extension of a bar's liquor license for which approval must be gained from the city and an additional fee must be paid.

(There is additional detail involved in the approval-getting process, but it would be painfully boring for me to relay and you to read.)

eggs ackley's picture

"Can I drink on any public sidewalk if I am sitting down?"

Yes, if you're drinking Mad Dog in a brown paper bag. I'll bring some cheese for your whine.

C'mon, now, don't make us beg you to attend. LOL

QueenOfMemphis's picture

I've just gotta ask... does anyone else see irony in someone asking me (of all people) why I'm not planning this little get-together in an out-of-town bar because smoking is allowed there?

Politicalchemy's picture

"does anyone else see irony..."

That's not irony, QOM.  Its idiocy.  You had the first and last letters right, though.

QueenOfMemphis's picture

Thanks for the correction "And now..."  I do get my words confused sometimes. :)

I may or may not show... I have the CARE-3 candidate forum that night so it depends on how my day goes...

The temptation to come is strong. But I'll resist.

A couple hundred posts at my forum about how terrible the N-G is, though, might cause me to reconsider.

QueenOfMemphis's picture

Aw c'mon Wenalway. I can tell you really want to. How 'bout wearing an Anonymous nametag; and as long as you don't go about hunting non sequiturs, we need never know. What happens at Memphis, stays at Memphis. ;)

Sorry, but my enthusiasm for Tuesday night at the bar is not high.

Now if you had some smokes and some illegal gambling machines ...

Church group, sorry Mom.

Heck, let's just invite all people who enjoy alcohol!

Or we could also include all people who enjoy liquids!

QueenOfMemphis's picture

Psst! Anon 1:31:  I think that's called the usual drill. Whereas I'm quite looking forward to the novelty of hanging out with some folks who enjoy a little blogging with their liquids.  : )

DaveM:  We'll miss you. Pray for us, if inspiration strikes. I'm thinking if Anon 1:31 joins the party, we just might need it...  *LOL*

Wenalway: *smack!*

Bumped as a reminder.

Hope to see everyone there - I'll be getting there at 5-ish.

I have a Clock and Bell Tower mtg and then Election Judge School. Maybe next time.

I think I would come, Tuesday nothwithstanding, but I am starting a jury trial that day.  Would someone who does attend please kick anonymous in the ass for me.  As lawyers like to say: not hard enough to hurt him, but hard enough that he remembers the occasion.

John

We are still here. All seem to be having fun (Wenalway isn't here) :). Many were here earlier maybe next week the rest of you won't miss out.

IlliniPundit's picture

I had a great time, and it was wonderful to meet so many that I'd only known on here or via email.  I hope we do it again soon, and would like to thank QueenOfMemphis for hosting us.

And if you were there, run4cvrlogic, then I'm glad I'm not.

I was the guy dressed like a ninja in the dark corner of the room.  What, didn't you see me?  It's all falling into place... Mwahahahahah

Good morning to all!

I just wanted to comment of the very good time I had last night.  I truly enjoyed talking to the Queen and Eggs, and hope to be able to get to spend some time with some of the others as the weeks go by.  Interesting how my drink of choice (rumpleminze) happened to be a special last night...perhaps the Queen has greater powers than I thought!

Looking forward to the next round of rants!

QueenOfMemphis's picture

Hey Bartender, so pleased you showed up!  I'd like to claim credit for the fortuitous drink special, but I think that's actually our ghosts at work. ;)

What a grand time... I had so much fun getting to meet you all!!  Lots of memorable moments with each of you throughout the evening that are sure to be rolling around my noggin for a while. Thank you so much for coming out.

If my count is right, we had 18 people total, though not all at the same time. Quite an interesting mix, lots of lively conversation covering a wide span of topics. My only complaint is that it was hard to pick which conversations to join in on.

Yep, I'm definitely game for a weekly gathering.  But I think I'll leave the tiara home next time...  :)

No keep the tiara bring the bear next time too.

Yeah, it was fun.  I enjoyed meeting people, and the garlic pizza was quite good.

eggs ackley's picture

It was a good time and wonderful conversation. I didn't get to meet all, but was happy to put (screen) names with faces. Run4cvrlib, Xian, A Bartender You Know, Kevin Sandefur and Laura, Karen Foster, Wayward, Mark, IP, and of course the always poised, regal and elegant Queen of Memphis (sorry if I missed anyone, I should have written names down after the third pint). Xian shocked me when he congratulated me on the Trib picking up one of my comments from the IP for their "IN OTHER WORDS: A sampling of opinions," section. My one-half second of fame. We all missed Wenalway and of course Anonymous.

I agree it should be a regular function.

IlliniPundit's picture

Eggs,

That's really cool - I had no idea the Tribune was doing something like that.

I was very happy to meet Kevin & Laura, Queen, Eggs, Bartender and Xian, even if only briefly.

I, too, would love to do it again.

eggs ackley's picture

It was a bit sparse tonight...let's have a better turnout next week. Just the Queen, run4cvrlib, the always effervescent Dan Fielding and me. And wenalway...we're still waiting for you, if you have the balls to debate face to face.

Glock21's picture

I will almost definitely be back next Tuesday.  Under the weather today.

For about the millionth time:

I don't go to the bars during the week, and I have no intention of ever coming to one of these.

So please keep me out of any further posts about this event. Thanks in advance.

Your welcome we really missed you. Wayward was fun. Glock sorry you were under the weather maybe next time. You missed the 20 dancing girls. I was in a bar I thought it was pizza place.

Glock21's picture

I always miss the dancing girls!  It just isn't fair.  And don't worry, I'm sure he's just playing hard to get... but he and  "his band of ball point pen-armed content saviors single-handedly take on the Dark Forces of Quark and their Improperly Color-Calibrated Monitors of Doom."  Probably very time consuming.

Get well, Glock!  Not the same without you.
