No matter how much you hate conservatives, the argument just doesn't make any sense - from the linked article:
What's the argument? That conservatives' tragic misunderstanding of freedom has produced exactly what Goldwater feared most: stifling the energy and talent of the individual, crushing creative differences, forcing conformity - and, yes, even leading us to despotism (and I'm not talking about habeus corpus or NSA spying). By methodically undermining the public's will and ability to underwrite the public good, systematically accelerating economic inequality, and making turning oneself into a commodity - "selling out" - the only possible route for young people who wish a reasonably secure middle class existence, conservatives killed liberty. The canary in the coal mine is the death of young people's "freedom to live adult lives typified by choice rather than economic compulsion."
I think what they're saying - and it's hard to tell amongst all the "conservatives are evil incarnate" goobledygook - is that the price of higher education and the resulting indebtedness means that graduates who want to do public service are instead forced to work private sector jobs - what your article calls "economic compulsion," which is a laughably absurd term.
But there are other problems, most notably that it wasn't conservatives who jacked up the price of higher education.
For one thing, it's hard to argue that conservatives run higher education in America.
For another, Federal Financial Aid is structured in such a way as to encourage institutions to massively increase prices, while making it easiest for students to finance education through loans.

re: Conservatism. It amazes me that the liberal position of giving back 15 cents of every dollar as "services" is considered the "right" thing, but letting people keep that dollar and provide their own services as "greed incarnate" is rather absurd. When the government operates at anything close to the level of efficiency most charities do, then we can talk about giving the government money. I posit that higher education would be **more** affordable if the government got out of the business.
Let's be honest, this view of taxation is really nothing more than seeking to find other people to pay for your "stuff". Sure, police, fire, military, that's all common good and everyone should pay. But the primary beneficiary of a higher education is the recipient and there is no reason that individual should be able to leech on the rich to get something that they'll benefit from the most. The fact that it is so cheap to attend college shows itself in how unseriously most undergrads take their education. College to most is really a 4 5 year drunk fest. I used to have a problem with professors who loathe to teach undergrads (especially gen ed courses), then I came back and realized why they dislike it so much... so few people are there to actually learn. Exactly why should society pay for the scorched ass mentality of doing just enough to get a piece of paper?
Until we get the idea that with the public receipt of money comes a reciprocal sense of duty, I'm not convinced higher education is really worth spending money on (or most other social programs).
I think it does reflect somewhat on the parents, I think the elder Gores probably did the best they could with their children and at the age of thirty, the Child should be responsible for himself. I think the parents at this point probably feel bad enough and if they were not public figures would be able to deal with their hurt in private. I guess that public pain is a part of being a public person. I don't think we, as caring people have to make it so hard on them.

Thirty? He's 24 right now, and his first run-in with the law was in 2000. Therefore, the problems with the law began when he was around 17.
My Dad would have been MORE than happy to have taken some serious corrective action if I had needed it, when I was 17. Or did the Gores "have people" to take care of issues like that for them?
It isn't my intention to attack the kid. It really isn't.
HOWEVER, when his old man thinks that he has the God given right to lecture, belittle, and talk down to all of us like we're all a bunch of small children, at the same time that one of his own kids is such a mess... that reeks of hypocrisy in my book. This ISN'T the first time the kid has screwed up.
And Tipper isn't much better either. Remember the PMRC? And Tipper knew better than the rest of us on that topic as well, didn't she? Typical liberal mindset.
I guess I should be surprised that only *one* of their kids has problems.

The accident with the Kerr family sounds like a fluke. A three-year-old figured out how to undo her restraints, the father tried to get them back on, and the mother got distracted and had an accident. The legislation that Julia Rietz helped draft was related to 1) drivers who were at fault in an accident where someone was killed and 2) drivers distracted by interactive technologies (e.g., cellphones). So these laws wouldn't have applied to the Ms. Kerr.

Doing 100+ on the interstate, and in posession of pot... and pills that he did not have any prescriptions for. He has a history of drug abuse and problems. Yet his old man feels compelled to lecture all the rest of us at every chance he can get...
Now that we have that out of the way, how about some discussion of Larry, Moe, and Curly... otherwise known as Rod, Emil, and Michael?
Al Gore's son is 24 and able to set his own course in life. I doubt any of us has any idea what his dad is doing to help him out. To presume he's doing nothing is pretty ridiculous.
Toyota must be thrilled though. It would be virtually impossible for any corp to run advertising that their product has the ability to break every speed law in America. The young Gore just gave them hundreds of thousands in free advertising.
re: Al Gore's son... who cares? The "gotcha" politics that really seeks to descend on every human tradgedy to attempt to score points is truly subhuman and unworthy of any consideration whatsoever.
re: Conservatism.
College to most is really a
45 year drunk fest. I used to have a problem with professors who loathe to teach undergrads (especially gen ed courses), then I came back and realized why they dislike it so much... so few people are there to actually learn. Exactly why should society pay for the scorched ass mentality of doing just enough to get a piece of paper?Until we get the idea that with the public receipt of money comes a reciprocal sense of duty, I'm not convinced higher education is really worth spending money on (or most other social programs).

> I think the elder Gores probably did the best they could with their children and at the age of thirty, the Child should be responsible for himself.
Distracted driver causes accident with injuries http://www.news-gazette.com/news/local/2007/07/05/family_of__injured_after_van_flips_over
Good thing she wasn't talking on a cell phone, eh?
There oughta be a law about distracted drivers. Check with State's Attorney Reitz.
My sympathies and prayers are with the Kerr family. My sympathies and prayers are not with Reitz.
The Bush girls got into a little scrape over underage alcohol, remember?
The apple doesn't fall far from the tree, does it?
At least they didn't get a DUI like dear old dad.
"The Bush girls got into a little scrape over underage alcohol, remember?
The apple doesn't fall far from the tree, does it?"
Are you saying Al Gore abuses prescription drugs and drives his hybrid at almost 100mph?
No, I'm saying people shouldn't attack Al because of his son.
Or, I am saying the Bush girls have a convicted DUI driver for a father, and reportedly a coke snorter, too.
You pick.

I understood your intent - but your attempted slam on Bush and his daughters ("the apple doesn't fall far from the tree...") could also be interpreted to be a slam on Al Gore and his son.
Perhaps you should be more careful when attacking your particular partisan villians. Of course, it would have been more constructive to actually have added something to the discussion, but I'm sure you feel better now, having spoken truth to power and all that.
Now back to your regularly scheduled programming....
Kerr.
True or false: George Bush is a convicted drunk driver?
True or false: his daughters got arrested for underage alcohol?
True or false: Al Gore never got a DUI or arrested for possession of pot or pills?
From my point of view, the girls are cute, the Gore kid is an idiot, Al is a doofus, and GW is an anti-conservative, secretive-anti-transparency-in government , NCLB -pushing, immigration-knuckleheaded, natural disaster-bungling, incompetent Commander-In-Chief. But he picks good SCOTUS people. After Harriet Miers, that is.

I never disputed your facts. All I did was point out that your attempted shot at Bush and his daughters could also be construed as a shot at Gore and his son.
And that this thread would have been more constructive without it, or without any of the inane shots at Gore (and Bush, for that matter).
Now back to your regularly scheduled programming.
At least they didn't kill anyone.......like Ted Kennedy did.
Same old same old. WEFT is about to have another Board of Directors election, and the Committee for the Reform of WEFT is about to spring an AWARE-style surprise. They're keeping three stealth candidates in the wings in order to keep the WEFT membership in the dark, and are stockpling new memberships among sympathizers to turn in at the last minute before the deadline for voting. They say that WEFT is not the diverse community radio that it should be, which may be true--I don't know because I don't listen to it--but I find their coup-like tactics unsettling and anti-democratic. So who are the candiates? Giraldo Rosales, and two others whose names I won't mention for now because it grieves me to see them involved in this scheme. Giraldo doesn't suprise me, but the others disappoint me.

Ah, CROW (http://reformweft.org/) ? I remember hearing about that fight.
Hey Gregg,
So you wanna be a cheapshot artist?
OK, right back at ya.
Like Laura did.
(Sorry, I thought IP frowned on cheapshots, but Gregg needs to be educated, or re-educated.)
STOP THE CHEAPSHOTS!!!! IT WAS A KID, he just happens to be "somebody who you have heard of's" son.
"You know, Nicky Hilton was married to Liz Taylor so I bet Mickey Rooney is disappointed with Paris Hilton but what does he matter he's had like seven wives or something, and he's short, too, and was a bad kid in Boy's Town so I bet he is a bad guy in real life blah blah blah."
The Gore kid screwed up. Give him the heat he deserves. Lay off the old man.
Unless, Gregg, I heard your kid f*rted, so you must be stinky, too.
End of childishness, I hope.

It wasn't Gregg who started the Al Gore III foolishness. All Gregg did was throw in a stupid reference to Ted Kennedy.
I know this is an Open Thread, but there's gotta be something worth discussing besides Al Gore III and the Amazing Speeding Hybrid.
Even a coup at WEFT is more interesting...
Ah, CROW (http://reformweft.org/) ? I remember hearing about that fight.
Caw! Caw! Besides Giraldo Rosales, the other two CROW candidates are Zernial Bogan and Durl Kruse.

Zernial seems like a nice guy, and I've never had a problem with Durl either.
"Like Laura did" Please explain.

I agree that they are nice people. That's why I'm shocked that they'd become a part of Randall Cotton's vendetta. If they are going to run for the WEFT Board of Directors, they should do it openly so that the issues can be publicly debated. Instead, they are going the carpetbagger route.

OK, I'm confused - aren't they running for some sort of WEFT offices?
Oh, anyone with money can vote in the WEFT election. All you have to do is pay $40 for membership. Actually, you can pay $10 on installment, and if you don't like the election results, you can renege on your commitment! It will be interesting to see how many do that...
WEFT is something to do with Carl Estabrook, right?
OK, I'm confused - aren't they running for some sort of WEFT offices?
They haven't filed yet. They want to do it at the last minute in order to gain the element of surprise. That's why I called them carpetbaggers: stealth candidates and a last-minute bought election. This is what democracy looks like! LOL
WEFT is something to do with Carl Estabrook, right?
WEFT is a community radio station, 90.1 FM. Carl has a program on WEFT.
"They haven't filed yet. They want to do it at the last minute in order to gain the element of surprise."
1) What conceivable advantage is there to such a strategy? Either there are other people running, or there are not. If there are other people running, they should conceivably be talking to members in advance no matter what. If there are no other people running, then what's the point of any sort of manipulation?
2) How much of a secret can it be if you know about it? I'm assuming that your knowledge is not isolated; i.e., if you know about it, probably others do, too. Now everyone knows. At least everyone who reads IP, which I will grant you, may not be a significant number of WEFT members...
Members need to attend multiple meetings before they can vote. That doesn't mean that what is above is a complete fabrication, but it's not a good sign when your conspiracy theory is based on a poor understanding of by-laws.
WEFT was super-fun. I would probably still be involved if I were in CU. I certainly miss doing the programming.
There were always some folks playing weird politics, but I guess that's true in any organization with a mixture of people who are over-serious and those who are completely flippant.
Xian - I don't think members need to attend multiple meetings before they can vote. Or, rather, we didn't. We were simply sent a ballot last time with a brief paragraph written by those running to be potential board members. We voted accordingly.
