CHICAGOANS CALL ON THEIR REPRESENTATIVES TO TAKE A STAND THIS SEPTEMBER, END WAR IN IRAQ
OVER 500 VIGILS ACROSS THE COUNTRY TO HONOR FALLEN SOLDIERS
Candlelight vigil in front of the Monument in Logan Square (intersection of Kedzie, Logan Boulevard and Milwaukee) in Chicago
CHICAGO– On Tuesday, August 28, members of MoveOn.org Political Action in Chicago will hold a candlelight vigil to call on Congress to vote to end the war in September.
“It’s time for the Bush Administration to stop looking through rose-colored glasses and realize that the surge has been a total failure,” said Richard Stowell, local MoveOn volunteer. “Our representatives must Stand Up in September and vote to end this religious civil war that can’t be won,” concluded Stowell.
Participants in the vigil will read from a “War Toll Calendar” to honor and remember the soldiers that have died in the past year in the unwinnable religious civil war in Iraq.
Vigils like this one are part of national Take A Stand Day - a coordinated day of action to end the war initiated by the Americans Against Escalation in Iraq coalition, including MoveOn.org Political Action, VoteVets.org, the Service Employees International Union, True Majority and others.

Guess i'll be the first to ask this, but since this is a Champaign-Urbana/downstate/non-Chicago political blog, why are you advertising a Chicago-based vigil here?

Moveon.org???? That pretty much sums it up. "The kook fringe"
If the Dem's really wanted to end the war, all they would have to do is stop the funding, They keep voting to spend more money on the war. If they were serious that would have been Ms. Pelosi's first priority after the election!!!! Maybe the MTD will provide free transportation to the locals that want to go to Chi-town for the protest!!!
Never trust someone with more than 2 "g"s in their name...
...or less than two "x"s.
Oops. Nevermind

Heh.
speaking of names, xian, how would one pronounce your screen-name, even if it only has the one "X"?
is it "Zi-an", with the first syllable like "xylaphone"? I had a college history professor (for a Reformation/Counter-Reformation class) that shorthanded "Christian" to "Xian", because of the Greek letter that became associated with Christ...
or is it something else? (it's a slow monday, what can i say?)

At 1:11 am 8 27 Xian posted: "Never trust someone with more than 2 "g"s in their name..." I have 3, 1 in my first name 2 in my last!!!! "TRUST ME"
Boggle.
"speaking of names, xian, how would one pronounce your screen-name, even if it only has the one "X"?"
I always just assumed it was pronounced as two short syllables that more or less glide into one: shee-ahn morphing into something akin to the celtic "sean." Never occurred to me to ask. Figured there might be a chance for that in person someday...
Now our resident know-it-all, Kevin Sandefur, is giving lessons on foreign languange phonics.
"Thats funny right there, I don't care who you are!"
"Now our resident know-it-all, Kevin Sandefur, is giving lessons on foreign languange phonics. "
Unnecessary.
Additionally, I think Kevin is correct in this case, if my memory of my one brief introduction to xian is correct.
Actually, I was just killing time until xian showed up to answer the question himself. I'm kinda surprised he hasn't already.
And upon reflection, it may be more of a "zh" sound than a "sh." In that case, it would sound more like the French "jean."
In any event, if folks are amused by my thinking out loud, then the Taoist in me finds joy that they are so easily entertained, even while the Baptist in me forgives their rudeness, and the scientist in me wonders what particular species of bug crawled up their butts. ;-)
Xian name is pronouced Sean we met at a Blogger bash quite a nice chap really.
Yeah, Kevin is right. It's She-on. If you say it more quickly it's closer to "Sheen". If you want to just say "Sean" that's certainly fine by me--I'm Irish as well. My middle name is Eugene--my grandfather thought it was after his middle name, but it's actually after the person who got a good share of the popular vote for president...from jail.
I get everything from "Ian" to "Jean" to "Chon" to "Ex-ian". The Christian reference comes up frequently too.
It doesn't really matter to me as long as it's not mocking. It's also a good initial filter to see whether the person approaching me is relatively good-natured--I don't care if they get it right, but if they are dismissive or belligerent, that's not a good sign.
xian, thanks for the info...i've been saying "xy-an", like xylaphone, for so long now in my head that it'll be hard to break myself of the habit...
your middle name is really after Debs?? so were you given your leftnik club card at birth, or some time later ;) :)

I thought it was Zee-on, as in the activist warrior woman, like my name is Sue, how do you do? My bad dude.
Vigil, its the thought that counts, I can assure you the thoughts are on Bush and destroying or undermining his administration, not on the true sacrifice of these soldiers. Most of them gave their lives in a war they believe in, a war to spread freedom to others who have not had the likes in their lifetime.
The left is our own worst enemy. Progressive, a catch all word, they seem to always manage to progress further and further in the wrong direction, to the detriment of all of us.

It's a good thing we have Rackivist with his awesome psychic powers, because a debate is always well-served by demonizing one's opponents.
