From today's News-Gazette:
The Champaign school board will begin its evaluation of Superintendent Arthur Culver on Thursday evening, but it won't be extending his contract any further this year.
The board will meet in closed session at 6 p.m. at the Mellon Administrative Center, 703 S. New St., C, but it will not formally evaluate Culver at the meeting.
Board President Dave Tomlinson said Culver asked that his contract not be extended this year.
"He felt the new board wanted more time to work with him before making any decision to extend or not extend," Tomlinson said, adding the decision not to discuss a contract extension this year was a joint one between Culver and the board.
With five new board members elected last spring, it was not the time to ask for a contract extension, Culver said.
"It's not fair to this current board," he said. "They want a part of setting goals." Culver's current contract goes through 2012.
Discuss.

I guess I'm not understanding Culver's statement. He already has a contract through 2012, so it doesn't seem to be any hardship not to ask for an extension beyond that. Is it just general practice here in Champaign or in education in general to ask for and receive these lengthy extensions?
Its tenure and it ties the hands of future boards. It also keep the Supt. from job hunting before every election.
I guess you're right he's only making a million dollars...hmmmmm.
Actually, he makes $225,000/year, plus we pay for his cell phone, his car, and I'm sure there are assorted other goodies we aren't being told about...
The real question, in my mind, is how much his wife Annetta makes in her job at the U of I.
You go to the library at the U of I and ask for the salary book. Her salary would be in there, it's public knowledge.
Do you think we could get him to use proper english and grammar during radio and TV interviews? If he could, I think the board should consider a contract extension.
I know, I just need to get to the main library and get this done.
Given the number of contract extensions Mr. Culver has received in the past, I think any requirements for speaking proper English should be brought up after 2010. Maybe it could be one of the new goals the Board is allegedly preparing for him.
He will be gone when his kid graduates from High School in 3 years.
That "little" blow-up with the Franklin M.S. basketball coach and Xander Culver took place about 5 years ago (2003, if memory serves). Does he really have kids in high school for 3 more years, or are you including kids in college? I thought Xander was a jr. this year and graduates next year (2009).
