Subject: Darwin Awards

Yes, it's again that magical time of the year when the Darwin Awards are bestowed, honoring the least evolved among us. Here is the glorious winner:

1. When his 38-caliber revolver failed to fire at his intended victim during a holdup in Long Beach, California, would-be robber James Elliot did something that can only inspire wonder. He peered down the barrel and tried the trigger again. This time it worked.

And now, the Honorable Mentions:

2. The chef at a hotel in Switzerland lost a finger in a meat-cutting machine and submitted a claim to his insurance company. The company, expecting negligence, sent out one of its men to have a look for himself. He tried the machine and he also lost a finger. The chef's claim was approved.

3. A man who shoveled snow for an hour to clear a space for his car during a blizzard in Chicago returned with his vehicle to find a woman had taken the space. Understandably, he shot her.

4. After stopping for drinks at an illegal bar, a Zimbabwean bus driver found that the 20 mental patients he was supposed to be transporting from Harare to Bulawayo had escaped. Not wanting to admit his incompetence, the driver went to a nearby bus stop and offered everyone waiting there a free ride. He then delivered the passengers to the mental hospital, telling the staff that the patients were very excitable and prone to bizarre fantasies. The deception wasn't discovered for 3 days.

5. An American teenager was in the hospital recovering from serious head wounds received from an oncoming train. When asked how he received the injuries, the lad told police that he was simply trying to see how close he could get his head to a moving train before he was hit.

6. A man walked into a Louisiana Circle K, put a $20 bill on the counter and asked for change. When the clerk opened the cash drawer, the man pulled a gun and asked for all the cash in the register, which the clerk promptly provided. The man took the cash from the clerk and fled, leaving the $20 bill on the counter. The total amount of cash he got from the drawer: $15.

7. Seems an Arkansas guy wanted some beer pretty badly. He decided that he'd throw a cinderblock through a liquor store window, grab some booze, and run. So he lifted the cinderblock and heaved it over his head at the window. The cinderblock bounced back and hit the would-be thief on the head, knocking him unconscious. The liquor store window was made of Plexiglas. The whole event was caught on videotape.

8. As a female shopper exited a New York convenience store, a man grabbed her purse and ran. The clerk called 911 immediately and the woman was able to give them a detailed description of the snatcher. Within minutes, the police apprehended the snatcher. They put him in the car and drove back to the store. The thief was then taken out of the car and told to stand there for a positive ID. The thief then said, "Yes, officer, that's her. That's the lady I stole the purse from."

9. The Ann Arbor News crime column reported that a man walked into a Burger King in Ypsilanti, Michigan, at 5 a.m., flashed a gun, and demanded cash. The clerk turned him down because he said he couldn't open the cash register without a food order. When the man ordered onion rings, the clerk said they weren't available for breakfast. The man, frustrated, walked away.

**A 5-STAR STUPIDITY AWARD WINNER**

10. When a man attempted to siphon gasoline from a motor home parked on a Seattle street, he got much more than he bargained for. Police arrived at the scene to find a very sick man curled up next to a motor home near spilled sewage. A police spokesman said that the man admitted to trying to steal gasoline and plugged his siphon hose into the motor home's sewage tank by mistake. The owner of the vehicle declined to press charges, saying that it was the best laugh he'd ever had.

Anonymous 10:21:

I don't know where your submission of the Darwin Awards came from, but they're funny as usual.  The 2007 list can be found here.

Late night:

Roger Clemens is expected to testify that a size 48 neck is completely normal.

And of course Mitt Romney dropped out of the race, and I'm going to miss him. Romney looked like a close personal friend of the late Bob Crane. ... Romney looks like a guy who says to the bartender, 'If I wanted a glass of tonic, I would have ordered it.' ... Romney looks like a guy you just met who uses your first name too much. ... Mitt Romney looks like a cavalry officer who has no intention of honoring the treaty with the Apaches.

Very awkward moment in the Hillary Clinton campaign today. I guess Hillary told her staff to call Democrats with money, and they called Barack Obama.

Here's something interesting. They did a poll on whether Bill's campaigning for Hillary helped her or hurt her. And 38% thought it hurt her, 36 percent thought it helped her, and 26 percent said, 'He never told me he was married!'

The government is going to be handing out rebate checks. We're like a bad car dealership now in this country, handing out the rebate checks. They're trying to restore confidence in the U.S. economy. The bad news - half the people want the money in euros, the other half want it in pesos.

Flirting with the Westboro Baptist Church ....

An oldie but a goodie...

A woman in a hot air balloon realized she was lost.
She lowered her altitude and spotted a man in a boat below.
She shouted to him, 'Excuse me, can you help me? I promised a friend I would meet him an hour ago, but I don't know where I am.'
The man consulted his portable GPS and replied, 'You're in a hot air balloon, approximately 30 feet above a ground elevation of 2346 feet above sea level. You are at 31 degrees, 14.97 minutes north latitude and 100 degrees, 49.09 minutes west longitude.
She rolled her eyes and said, 'You must be a Republican.'
'I am,' replied the man. 'How did you know?'
'Well,' answered the balloonist, 'everything you told me is technically correct, but I have no idea what to do with your information, and I'm still lost. Frankly, you've not been much help to me.
The man smiled and responded, 'You must be a Democrat.'
'I am,' replied the balloonist. 'How did you know?'
'Well,' said the man, 'you don't know where you are or where you're going.
You've risen to where you are, due to a large quantity of hot air.
You made a promise that you have no idea how to keep, and you expect someone else to solve your problem. You're in exactly the same position you were in before we met, but, somehow, now it's my fault.

ew, stay off my threads.

Did Joan just delete someone's post and tell them to "stay off her threads?"

Yes, Arvid, I needed to take off some incredible hate speech meant to incite violence. I value a lively discussion of all sides. Hijacking threads for the shock value is unacceptable.

...but censorship is.

Arvid's picture

That was quite a dick move on your part.  He posts things with hate and inciting violence all the time.  You have the option of not reading it if you don't like it.  I suggest you do that next time instead of deleting.  It's not your thread.  As IP points out quite often, there are other options available if you do not like the content here.  I don't know what he said, and if history is any indicator it was probably something very stupid moronic and hateful.  That you don't feel like ignoring like the rest of us doesn't give the right to delete.  You say hateful things all the time.  Perhaps we should delete those postings as well?

Joan-I suggest you censor Arvid also.

Yes, Arvid, I needed to take off some incredible hate speech meant to incite violence. I value a lively discussion of all sides. Hijacking threads for the shock value is unacceptable.

Really, it just seemed like the usual EW idiocy, which no longer seems incredible.

Look, I have some standards on my threads. I don't care if you think it's censorship. As a teacher, I don't allow just anything in my class. Same goes here. I don't delete opposing views, even your gutter name calling (real intelligent move, BTW). I will continue to take away shock-only posts. If you want to drag your own blog into the lowest common denominator just to please the hijackers, go ahead. I won't.

which no longer seems incredible.

You hit the nail on the head. It NO longer seems incredible. We are so jaded and complacent, nothing seems inappropriate.

I'm with Joan on this one.  But that probably goes without saying given my comments about eww the bigot-boy.

Glock21 Op/Ed

Arvid's picture

Joan, this isn't your classroom and you do not own this thread.  You do not get to set the standard of discoure for the conversation that takes place in it, even if you are the primary author.  I'm certain everyone here has started a thread that goes a direction they really didn't want it to.  It's not your blog, it belongs to IP, who has made it clear in the past that it is not acceptable to delete the comments of registered users.  You have been granted elevated privileges (hence your ability to bump threads to the front) for various reasons.  I'm fairly certain this was not one of those reasons.  Yes, eww is a moron and a bigot.  That doesn't give you the right to delete his posting, though.

I tolerate a lot from people, including your hate filled hyper-partisan rants and "funnies", but one thing that always pushes my buttons is when a group of people who take great joy in pointing out the censorship on the UCIMC site turn around and to the exact same thing here.  EW is a registered user, jackassery and all.  His right to post in all threads is the same as yours (regardless of how utterly stupid they make him look), or are some users more equal than others?

The First Amendment is in grave danger because Joan deleted hate speech from her own thread.  Maybe Kirchner can sue.

Anyone else remember when several people pitched a fit when people used the democratic options on the forum to demote a particular poor edition of the "Friday Funnies"?

So if someone used the N word on here, that would be ok if they are registered?

Arvid, I guess your wrong the comments are gone.

I don't think Mr. Overly-Concerned-About-Teh-Gay's posts are done to incite violence, per se. Inciting violence is a specific call to action. I think he's just putting forward the standard conservative Christian line that gays deserve to die. That's not really trying to provoke a violent response.

His stuff is so over the top, I've wondered if he is just a troll.

All that being said, it would be nice if it was made clear when a comment was removed. (Personally, I think disemvoweling is a much more suitable response. Banishing this sort of thing into the dark allows it to mold and fester.) I thought it was really strange Joan was objecting so strongly to the old joke about the hot air balloon. Can you edit a comment to make it just say "[This comment removed by an administrator]" or something?

You do not get to set the standard of discoure for the conversation that takes place in it,

Of course she does. As with anything, there is always a standard. It just depends on how low or high one wants to set the bar. Yours is rock bottom, hers isn't.

EW could be a liberal trying to over do a bad conservative.

Arvid's picture

Of course she does.

No, she doesn't.  She is exercising a power that other posters do not have.  If all users were given the ability to delete other users posts in threads that they start, then I would be a lot more ok with this.  However, since has been made clear in the past, this isn't acceptable, and I'm calling "shenanigans".  Again I ask, since when is one contributor more equal than others?

As with anything, there is always a standard. It just depends on how low or high one wants to set the bar.  Yours is rock bottom, hers isn't.

You know nothing of me, or the standards that I maintain. Your'e also not fully parsing what I'm saying.  I agree that EW spews some rather ignorant, misguided and vile crap.  I opt to ignore it, as has been the general guiding operating procedure for most people (see Mr. Mortland's postings about his deployment where people who disagree with what he is doing are told "if you don't like it, don't read it").  Glock opts to respond to it, and hilarity usually ensues (at EW's expense).  However, Joan seems to think that if she is offended, it's ok to delete what a registered user has posted.  I don't agree with that, and her claims of this being "her thread" are invalid.  It's not "her blog", and any claim of ownership of a conversation is not valid.

One difference between this forum and a classroom is that the posters here are generally less impressionable than kids.  I don't think that there's much chance of IP readers seeing ew's posts and believing that Fred Phelps is right.  Another difference is that adults are usually less shielded from the natural consequences of their actions than kids are.  So sure, ew's posts were idiotic, and many readers probably judged him accordingly.

Arvid I think your EW and your just playing games.

At the last Bad Conservative meeting we had to throw out two of them.

A few comments:

  1. In the past, I have given authors permission to moderate comments in their own threads.  It's never really been an issue before, so until we upgrade, I'm reclaiming that permission for myself only, and I'll go back to the old policy:  if someone has a problem with something, email me and I'll take a look.
  2. If I had been paying attention, I would have deleted ewjohnson's comments in this thread as well, but for being off-topic.  These comments don't belong in Friday Funnies, unless there is some sort of humor that I'm missing.  They more properly belong in the own thread entirely.
  3. ewjohnson has spent the last several weeks trying to derail multiple discussions, and shift the focus of conversation to him.  If you find him (or anyone else) disgusting, please ignore him.

Thanks.  Everything on here is always subject to changing circumstances, and some of these things we just need to work through as they happen.

Excellent.  While I agree (*cringe*) that there needs to be someone who has the unilateral power to delete comments, I'm comfortable with IP in that role.

It's his blog, but more importantly, he has earned my respect as one who dispassionately moderates what can often be a very passionate site.

Thanks.

Also, to be clear, non-spam comments are almost never deleted, but are rather "unpublished," which hides them from just about everyone.  That way, if I screw up, I can always "re-publish" it and nothing is ever lost.

Politicalchemy's picture

I must have missed class the day you covered unpublishing a comment.  Even better.

ewjohnson's picture

IP, I am not sure that I should agree with the notion that my comments were off-topic.

I made 2 posts in the most recent FridayFunnies.

One was another R.Crumb cartoon

illustrating the manipulation of the hoi polloi via the mainstream media's use of

"puppets".  I likened the hive mind of the bewitched hoi polloi to assimilation into the Borg.

The concept is timeless but seems especially appropriate in this particular election year.

The second thing I posted was a couple of links in response to the u-tube from the U.K.

which showed three young men, presumably "gays" (i find the word "gay" to be offensive, I prefer "fag")

mocking the Kansas anti-homosexual movement.  I was not offended by this

u-tube video although I most strongly disagree with its perverted message.  That video featured a fragment of

a fox interview of Shirley Phelps-Roper by Marie Banderas. I provided a clickable link to the full interview which shows how

Banderas badgered her guest during the interview.  I did provide a commentary, the gist of

which was that Shirley is a well-educated person not some Kansas hick, an attorney and also a bible scholar.  I was

particularly impressed with the facility with which Shirley fielded Banderas's questions.  I thought it would

be interesting to the IP viewers to see the interview in its entirety as a supplement to wayward's video.

I also included a link to a music video which the Kansas group provides on its web site is a prophetic word to the USA.

I thought it was instructional in that it provides such a strong contrast to the pathetically misinformed quasi-post-modern secular humanist

goody-goody Subversive drivel of "We Are the World".   I am sure that few people on IP have seen that parody.    That song We are the World is a great tune,

and I bet a tune like that could be a theme for the O'Bomba campaign.  There is a great video with some talented singers, not the least of

whom is Willie Nelson.  He sings "As God has shown us, by turning stones to bread...."  Wow, that sounds really cool coming

from a wizened sage like folk hero Willie, and even many Christians think, yes...God turns stones to bread...Hallelujah!

Actually, the Gospel according to Matthew does mention turning stones to bread, but the story is about how the Tempter challenged

Jesus to turn stones to bread (which Jesus did not do, see Matthew 3).

I liked the contrast that Westboro's clever parody "God hates the World" provides, and the end of the video is quite interesting and I think that

IP'ers would enjoy seeing it whether or not they appreciate the message.  The message is clear.  Abandon your sin and repent.

The content is scripturally accurate.  God is a consuming fire.  One might attract more with honey than with vinegar, but the "Candy Gospel" that is sold in

the mainstream churches sure aint too conducive to yer health.  I would agree that a frequent diet of Fred Phelps is like taking strong bitter medicine.

I am quite concerned that a schoolmarm with access to young minds, and who appears to have at least some connection

to the local Christian community would find pro-homosexual [and therefore by definition, anti-Christian] propaganda

less offensive than direct application of the Scripture, and delete my post while letting the pro-homosexual one stand.

That seems incredibly jaded to me.

And if being opposed to the propagation of homosexuality makes me a Bigot,

then I am well pleased to be a proactive Bigot on that account.

But you are wrong if you think I am a racist.

IlliniPundit's picture

"IP, I am not sure that I should agree with the notion that my comments were off-topic."

I didn't think your comments were an attempt to be humorous, your track record on here doesn't lend people to interpret your comments as humorous, you made no attempt to let anyone know that your comments were intended to be humorous, and at this point, I'm reluctant to watch the videos you link because of the foulness of the things you've written on here, so forgive me for not knowing they were humorous.

But that doesn't matter - I don't care if you agree, as it's not your decision to make.

"And if being opposed to the propagation of homosexuality makes me a Bigot, then I am well pleased to be a proactive Bigot on that account."

Hooray for you.  Understand that your hatred of homosexuals, to the point where you call for their execution, offends almost everybody who participates here, including me.  I will not criticize Joan or anyone else for reacting too strongly to your garbage, because I think that's why you post here - to provoke and offend as many people as possible as some way of seeking attention.

Unfortunately, your provocations have the effect of not adding to discussions, but rather distracting from them, as every thread in which you comment becomes a thread about you, instead of about the topic originally posted.  I previously had two other posters who had a similar effect, and I banned both of them, because they were unwilling to participate more congenially and everybody else was unwilling to allow their provocations to go unanswered.

You are rapidly approaching being banned from here - not because I'm afraid of your ideas, or because I'm too sensitive about your calling me a liberal Democrat, but because I don't want to have so many discussions derailed by your misogynistic rantings on the evils of everyone and everything you hate.  Your banning offense would be that you are an attention whore, unable or unwilling to allow an otherwise constructive discussion to continue unpolluted, without attempting to re-focus it on you and your hatred.

For me, the best solution to this problem would be for you to start your own blog, and see if you can build up a readership for your hateful observations.

Failing that, I'd prefer that you save your most disgusting garbage to be posted as blog entries of their own.  People can then choose to dicuss or ignore them on their own, without them infringing on any constructive discussions.

If you wish to comment in other discussions, I am going to continue to monitor your comments closely.  If I anticipate that a comment from you will ruin a discussion, I will unpublish it without hesitation.  Since you seem to think I am misunderstanding many of your comments, you should make a greater attempt to explain them so that I understand exactly what you mean when reading it so that I won't heavyhandedly unpublish something you meant in jest.  (And please fix your line breaks and formatting - I'm completely annoyed by them.)

Of course, any decision I make regarding your participation on here is subject to change, based on my whims, at any time. This site costs me a significant sum of personal funds every year, and is a labor of love.  I'm not going to have it ruined (or even worse - co-opted) by someone so hateful.

If you, or anyone else, wants to further discuss this, please email me.  This thread has veered far enough off course already.

"calling me a liberal Democrat"   (IP that is)

I almost choked on my drink, that was funny.

Narc, few Christian conservatives call for the death of Homo sexuals, none who understand the theology of Jesus, who have Christ in their heart, would judge to the point of calling for their death.  Those that do, have missed the point, they are right to be concerned for their welfare, some are destined to Hell, some are not.  Judge and ye shall not be judged.  EW iss over the top when he condems with a vengance.  Was it Mel Brookes who spoke of Abbey Normal?  Through Jesus all things are possible.  EW, I have seen enough of your theology to suggest you consider self introspection.  I'm sure you are aware of the plank in the eye parable, give it some thought.  If you want to save souls, go for the great commision, go after souls who have not heard the word, stop preaching hate, you are begining to remind me of the Jihadists.  Get over this homophobia thing, it is hurting the cause, some of these people are associating you with Christianity, your doing more harm then good.  If your heart is in the right place, recognize you have alienated many here on IP, might be best to rethink your aproach, both on the subject and to the audience.

Lets face it, shock gets response, their is no bad publicity.......Everyone uses the system.

I agree with Joan, had no one questioned her on this deletion, the blog would have gone on, instead it changed to a new topic.  Bad kids should sit in the corner and wait it out, sometimes.          I like to have my calls screened sometime, saves me time.

Keep up the good job on Fridays, Joan, I enjoy your efforts.

Narc, few Christian conservatives call for the death of Homo sexuals, none who understand the theology of Jesus, who have Christ in their heart, would judge to the point of calling for their death.

Maybe not in the "up against the wall, Ready, Aim, Fire" sense, but I still remember plenty of people saying in the 1980s that AIDS was God's just punishment against gays. I.e., they're getting what they deserve.

There are definetly plenty of Christian conservatives that believe in jail time for homosexual activity. The Bush administration argued this very point before the Supreme Court. With the amount of rhetoric out there about how gays "recruit" and molest children, I don't think it would be a big stretch if they also get their wish to return this country to it's "Christian nation" (non)heritage.

Just curious, wasn't Friday Funnies first meant to be a break from serious stuff and post interesting political cartoons and jokes of all persuasions? To laugh at all sides at the end of the week?

IlliniPundit's picture

"Just curious, wasn't Friday Funnies first meant to be a break from serious stuff and post interesting political cartoons and jokes of all persuasions? To laugh at all sides at the end of the week?"

Yes.  And I hope it continues.

I don't usually like all of Joan's cartoons, but I usually like at least one of them.  And the stuff posted in comments sometimes doesn't do anything for me, but is sometimes hilarious too.

It's something different, and not everybody will like everything, but doesn't need to be ruined by this.

What happened to the post on anonymous posts, I cant seem to find it?

"It's something different, and not everybody will like everything, but doesn't need to be ruined by this."

Too late. The anything-goes crowd has seen to it and anyone who dares oppose is a censor.

The "anonymous post" thread is there, just look in the next group.

Kevin Sandefur's picture

Wow, I quit paying attention for a couple of days and you guys go all ape s***.  It's probably just as well that I wasn't here, since my fundamental understanding of the Constitution makes me a staunch foe of censorship.

There was a similar discussion when the local Democrats first established their blog.  Some in the party wanted to prohibit all public comments, on the basis of a legal opinion that the party would be liable for anything anyone said.  The majority argued successfully that Democrats should promote dialogue.

There are really only a very, very few justifications for censorship.  Basically, it comes down to protection of minors and adherance to clearly defined rules which have been publicly delineated in advance.  After that, the only truly acceptable solution to offensive speech is more speech.  That goes for hate speech, as well.

On the other hand, as someone much smarter than I pointed out, freedom of the press only exists for the owner of the press.  The necessary corollary to that is that freedom of public speech only goes so far as the press allows.

I wonder, given the checkered history of the IMC forum and the consensus sensibility here, is there a place in C-U for an essentially unmoderated, adults only forum?  What would it look like, I wonder, and would it be worth it?  There'd be an amazing amount of wickedly stupid bs, to be sure, but would there be enough honest discussion to justify it?

IlliniPundit's picture

I've often considered adding a message-board type forum onto IP.com, where anything goes.  Never really got around to it.  I wonder if there'd be any demand for it.

I wonder if there'd be any demand for it.

I'm not sure how well it'd work - it could be a magnet for spam and nutcases. which would probably push legitimate users out.

I think that would be great because it might help direct those who need attention to that forum and the regular comments could be more constructive discussion.

I think that would be great because it might help direct those who need attention to that forum and the regular comments could be more constructive discussion.

But if most posters abandoned that forum and it became a bunch of reposts or spam, then those who wanted attention might figure out that they weren't getting it.  At that point, chances are that they'd try to insert themselves into the regular comments again.

Not trying to change the subject but prove a point, its funny how this constitutional; right free speech has to be un-restricted but gun rights can be restricted.

I can't help but see the irony in the complete arrogance of posters like Xian and Wayward who continually post about the "legitimacy" of their "constructive" comments compared to anonymous and less frequent posters on this blog.  Who appointed you two arbiters of what is legitimate, and do you really possess the hubris to consider all of your comments constructive?  You guys are the epitome of liberal thinking.  Try a little more humility and give us all a break.  Sheesh!

I can't help but see the irony in the complete arrogance of posters like Xian and Wayward who continually post about the "legitimacy" of their "constructive" comments compared to anonymous and less frequent posters on this blog.

Please provide an example of where I've made such a post.

Wayward,

O.K. I reread your posts above and I apologize.  They look worse sandwiched around Xian's comment.  I suppose I'm fed up with several posters here in the last few months indicating their comments are more legitimate or worthy than comments from "unregistered' commenters.  I find a lot of the posts from some of the "registered" users that have started posting in the past year to be just as insulting and inflammatory as the reviled anonymous posts.  I prefer the way IP used to be before IP "outed" himself".  This site has since become a forum for increasing numbers of liberals (no longer even local ones) regularly posting here just to and slam conservative viewpoints.  If you don't believe me go back and read some of the archived posts from a few years ago.
