Hosting Questions

Does anyone have any recommendations for a responsive, helpful local hosting company?

Right now I have three different hosting companies - one for IP.com, one for personal stuff, and one for clients.   Each has been OK, but not great.  IP.com, for example, has had a number of "service unavailable" problems that I can't figure out.

I'd like to move everything to a single host, and I'm going to need some technical help in doing so.  I'm willing to pay, of course, but I need to make sure that I'm getting the resources and support I need to not only run IP.com but also a number of other sites, including sites for clients/friends, etc.

Any recommendations?  Please feel free to post them in comments, or email me directly if you'd prefer.

Thanks. (Sorry for another housekeeping post.)

I know they aren't local, but "1and1.com" has worked great for me.  They have great rates and superior uptime.

I have a buddy who runs "webnetbs.com".  He is in Bloomington, IL., which is as local as I can get for you.

I have used 1and1 for several personal projects, and been pleased, but they aren't exactly local, and I've never really stressed their resources or needed direct support.

Locally, we use Shouting Ground for a lot of stuff at work.  We share a bookkeeper with them, so we know some of the folks there, and they've always been extremely helpful and responsive for us.

We also have a fair amount of stuff hosted at prairienet, which is one of our member agencies, and they also have been extremely helpful and supportive.

Shouting Ground Tech. IS local, and has always been very helpful, and knowledgeable in helping me with anything I've ever needed from them. Call and ask for Jim..

BTW: I have heard that they are also the folks that many many local IT gurus call when they are stumped.. and not from them.. :-)

I am using the non-local company Startlogic

I just started using them and am satisfied.   You may need more support than I

I always use godaddy.com.

The prices are great, and the service for shared hosting isn't too bad at all.  We usually have a bit of downtime every few months, but it's nothing terrible.  It's not local though.

Prarienet is a great local org if you want to go in that direction.

I always have far more disk and bandwidth than I need on my hosting accounts.  If you ever need to host anything huge, just shoot me an email.  Thanks for keeping me posted on events back home while I'm at school, this is a great blog.

I use godaddy.com for registrations, but their hosting services are way overpriced and not powerful enough for what we need here.

We currently have a VPS with about 600 MB of RAM, and we're regularly overloading it.  We use more than 100 GB of bandwidth monthly.

I think we're at the point where we need our own web and database servers.  And since the database that runs this site is now larger than 300 mb, moving it is going to require some help, too.

I've got some leads, but if anyone else has any suggestions, please keep them coming.

Thanks.

I've had good luck so far with Cirtex Hosting. They seem to be fairly generous with bandwidth, starting at 100 GB/mo, going up to 1500 for regular hosting. They do VDS as well, but I have no experience with that. They're not local, but I'm not sure how important that is to you.

Who are you using now?

Agreed that GoDaddy is expensive for hosting. Registration is reasonable, though.

rimuhosting.com is the host for IP.com.

Local is somewhat important to me, but not as important as making sure I have the resources that I need and the service to make up for my inexperience and lack of knowledge.

How about voxel.net?  Looks like they host dailykos.com.  If they can keep up with that site they can keep up with anyone.  May be way too pricey, though.

Yes. We're still on a budget, with donations and ads paying for something like half the site.

Korora, LLC, is Euan and Karen Fernsler.  Give them a call.
