Bleeding Ears

I don't know which is worse:  an afternoon Cardinals baseball game, or WDWS' normal afternoon programming.

Thank goodness for iTunes.  And is it football season yet?

I enjoy listening to Cardinal baseball, especially considering the afternoon alternative on WDWS.  Spending a bunch of time listening to the opening day ceremonies, however, I suspect is going to be a bit tedious.

I thought you conservatives loved the programming on WDWS. It's programmed specifically for you.

redstatewannabe's picture

not after 2pm its not.

Radio hell--- Shannon and Santo on the same broadcast team.  John Rooney is great tho....

Radio hell: anything but baseball. Real hell: anywhere Rush Limbaugh is audible.

Does anyone know what the ratings are for Limbaugh vs. WILL radio at the same time? that would be interesting.

Cardinal Baseball & 'WDWS' afternoon programming...      The choice is clear, turn off the radio.

That Turpin - Limbaugh lineup is a killer................and it would be interesting to compare with  will.   C vs U at that.

The ONLY thing that would be worse than Mike Shannon doing the Cards would be "Stevie Jay" doing Illini baseball with Dave "Mr. Excitement " Loane.

Here are the Spring 07 & Fall 07 numbers on audiences age 12+ (the only ones readily accessible for free). Note that only Arbitron Subscribers are included in the survey, thus the Illini Radio Group stations (WIXY, WLRW, WCFF "The Chief", WXTT "Xtra 99.1") are not included. Usually, WIXY is hands down number 1 in the area.

As to the comments on Mike Shannon, even as a White Sox fan, nothing says summer more than laying in the backyard on my hammock on a muggy night with the Cardinals on the radio. On the weekends I'll even have an ice cold beer or two just like Mike is doing at the ballpark!

I am looking forward to having Steve Stone on the Sox broadcast team this season.

While I agree that Gary O'Brian may be the most mind numbing radio host that's not in public radio, I will say that WDWS is the best place to find news in this town. I know IP loves to link N-G stories (and if WDWS were smart, they'd put their stories online too) but if you compare the N-G, the TV stations (which are sheer rubbish), and WDWS, I don't think there's a better place to find news than on WDWS.

But that's just one person's opinion.

Oh, for the days of Brant Hansen.  Silly WDWS.

Thank Goodness for XM...   Quinn and Rose, Mark Levin, Michael Reagan, Sean Hannity, Rusty Humphries, Laura Ingraham....

I completely agree.  I was just kidding someone at WDWS that if they would put their stories online, I'd much rather link to them when the story is new than the News-Gazette 24 hours later.  WDWS is great at news.  In fact, if it wasn't for their news, I'd only listen from 9-11.

I boycott WDWS becuase of the pain it cause me to start my car and accidently have to listen to one moment of that washed-up pill-popper Limbaugh.  The 5:04 pm newscast on WDWS is about 90 seconds long lately.  The WCIA TV website  (illinoishomepage) is at least timely, although you have to read the announcer's scripts verbatim.

If WDWS wants to claim that Rush is a success because their ratings are the highest locally its a logically false argument.  Their ratings would be even higher with white noise than with that bag-o-hot-air.

Hey Anon 11:43 Why don't you call Mike Halie at WDWS?WHMS and tell Him that. I'm sure YOU know more about the stations ratings than He does.

I too wish that Brant Hansen would come back, but alas, he has found himself a new home in Florida. Can't blame WDWS for him moving to S. Florida.

After a quick Google, here's a link to his blog -

http://www.brantsblogofawesomeness.typepad.com/

As far as O'Brian goes, I'd rather listen to NPR while sitting in a smoldering fire and covered with bees. A good guy I'm almost postive (without ever meeting him), but a good on air guy for the highest ranked talk station in the area? I don't think so. Might as well put on Thom Hartman to drive away the listeners.

After the way he was treated?

John Farney,

What time period are those ratings for?

To others, let me say, because I don't care if liberals like me or care that I may be called a racist, I like Rush Limbaugh a lot.  With half his brain tied behind his back he infuriates liberals.  With half his brain tied behind his back and while drug-addled and washed-up he runs rings around them.  How can you not like him? A good way to judge his effectiveness is to watch the vigor with which people claim he is ineffective.

Keep in mind that when things get slow with Rush, WIND (560) out of Chicago has lots of conservative programming.  Dennis Miller, Laura Ingram and Michael Medved there are all very good.  Michael Savage, not so much.

Isn't Brant Hansen the one who sent his stooge producer out to an anti-war rally to ask, "Who is a bigger terrorist, Saddam Hussein or George W. Bush?"  And then spliced the audio so it seemed that everyone they asked said Bush?

Yeah, a real monument to quality radio, that one.

Of course in retrospect maybe he was a prophet?

Either way, it might be interesting to see how many DWS listeners would be willing to pay for their radio every day.  I know WILL-AM has broken fundraising records for the last few years in a row.  They have gotten so good at getting their listeners to pledge that they now limit the pledge time to one hour in one day every couple of months.  Impressive, to say the least.

Would anyone pay to listen to WDWS?

redstatewannabe's picture

the Brant blog is quite good, but was a bit like rubbing salt in our wound.  I especially liked his post about all the things you get for the $160,140 it takes to raise a child:

Still, you might think the best financial advice is don't have children if you want to be "rich." Actually, it is just the opposite. What do you get for your $160,140?

* Naming rights. First, middle, and last!
* Glimpses of God every day.
* Giggles under the covers every night.
* More love than your heart can hold.
* Butterfly kisses and Velcro hugs.
* Endless wonder over rocks, ants, clouds, and warm cookies.
* A hand to hold, usually covered with jelly or chocolate.
* A partner for blowing bubbles, flying kites
* Someone to laugh yourself silly with, no matter what the boss said or how your stocks performed that day.

Good stuff.

Does that mean they are not taking tax dollars anymore?

I think they're still taking tax dollars.  And they've eschewed the greedy world of corporate advertisting, instead opting for thirty second sponsorship non-ads.

redstatewannabe's picture

Did you know?

Almost half of the WILL annual budget comes from the Friends of WILL and community business support

22 percent from federal funds via the Corporation for Public Broadcasting

21 percent from the University of Illinois

9 percent from the State of Illinois

3 percent from services and contracts

It is so nice that we can provide such a lovely service for the liberal elites in the CU area.

redstatewannabe's picture

I shouldn't have said "liberal elites" - I am sure the audience for classical music also contains a good number of rich conservatives.  My apologies.

Red,

Does whatever you are looking at break it down between Friends of WILL and Corporate sponsors?  Your numbers imply 45% for the two combined. The Friends support is looking a little less substantial.

John

Also, does the 21% from the U of I include physical plant support?

redstatewannabe's picture

That info was straight off their website - I don't know how they calced their numbers.

I would guess, however, that you are correct in saying that the 45% is for the 2 groups combined.

D. Boon,

I think the sponsors do.

Rumor has it the News-Gazette is losing money hand over fist while WDWS continues to make money.

And as far as I understand, WDWS makes more money than any station in the market.

Sure it does. It pays low wages, broadcasts Little League games and non-revenue U of I sports, doesn't pay to broadcast the Bears or Colts, pre-empts Cardinals games for wrestling meets, and it's only higher cost feeds are Rush and Hannity. Except for U of I football and basketball contracts, it's paying next to nothing.

When your prime radio show is an old geezer bringing in locals to interview or kids putting on shows, it doesn't cost much to fire up a transmitter that doesn't even make it to Paxton or Tuscola.

Brian Barnhart is a joke, when you listen carefully to him, he misses what is going on while making up the goofiest expressions, and there's the afternoon guy who is dull as a brick.

Loane does a good job, he is very good at women's sports broadcasts, and Gentry is the best they have. Otherwise, it's a bunch of retirees on contract or intern level quality.

Why do I listen to WDWS? I really have no idea. Probably the same reason I drive the same route to work each day. It's mindlessly easy to do.

D. Boon's picture

DWS and the FM equivalent have been propping up the News-Gazette for years.  Everyone knows that.  DWS is a money-maker because they have U of I sports and sell their ads in blocks.  So if you want to have you ads on during men's basketball you often have to buy time during the afternoon show.

But to equate WILL fundraising prowess with local advertisers buying 30 second spots of DWS is ridiculous.  Nobody is going to buy those spots if they don't think they will reach the ears of tens of thousands of people.  The folks who send cash to WILL expect nothing in return but good radio.

And David Ainge is the best interviewer in Central Illinois.  Why anyone would tune in the grade-school political analysis/hate speech of Rush when they could be learning something about the world every day is beyond me.

Agreed - Focus 580 with David Inge is superb.

Correct on all points. In fact, the N-G "bloodletting" (as stated by a N-G employee) has started, 20 to 30 year maintenance employees let go on Monday.

What time period are those ratings for?

6 a.m. to 12 midnight

Dont forget the Carl Estabrook show...................from poetry, with a voice perfectly matched, to politics with a mind perfectly matched to those Xtremist lefties who hate Rush with a passion, his target market.

Funny how truth is so subjective.

As far as my take on the radio personalities at DWS, they target their market quite effectively.  Why change programming when it aint broke.  It taint for everyone thats for sure.

They don't have much turnover with the staff or the radio personalities, so my guess is they pay market value and run a highly efficient business.

Do liberals hate the  word aint?

redstatewannabe's picture

And the taxpayers who have money taken from them get nothing in return except the satisfaction in knowing that you are enjoying it.

I seem to remember him.. What did WDWS do to him that caused him to leave?

D. Boon's picture

Yeah, you get the satisfaction of knowing that 0.00000000000000000000000001% of your federal tax dollars are going to an incredible public radio station, I get the satisfaction of knowing that 30% of my federal tax dollars are to going to your war.

Until you let me have back the thousands of my tax dollars our government has spent on this war you supported, you don't get your two cents back,  Yet who will bitch and moan more often and with more fervor?

This is fun reading.  Not sure if anyone's still on this thread, but THANK YOU to anyone who actually misses me.  That's an honor.

Just to correct a couple things:  I'm really happy to have worked for WDWS.  I'm not sure how I gave the impression that I left because of something they did, but I sure didn't mean to do that.  And the News-Gazette hierarchy was wonderfully supportive.  I have no complaints about my bosses.  They let me do some writing for the paper, too.  They went out of their way to help me and my family.

"D. Boon" brought back some great memories.  The "stooge producer" was (and is) a very brilliant liberal friend of mine.  The reaction to that tape was hilarious:  the activists said, simultaneously, that they were "misquoted" but were also "correct anyway."  My liberal, anti-war producer did the editing.  The folks were just embarrassed to have their actual opinions aired.  Ricky Somebody -- the guy with AWARE -- was cool about it, first upset that we aired their answers, but then admitting it's what they actually thought.

Note to self:  Some people will talk into a microphone, then resent you for airing what they actually said.

Like I say, I got a kick out of that.  My wife and I hung out with several members of AWARE, and, to a person, they'd all happily say that Bush is a worse dictator than Hussein.  And they'd do it happily.

So, D. Boon, you bring back great angry liberal memories.  It just wasn't fair that we aired actual opinions, that wound up sounding kinda strange when aired in public.  "Misquoted" but still "true".  (Jeremiah Wright, anyone?)  Oh, the outrage at everyone hearing what you said into a mic.

I got a nice note from the editor/publisher at the alternative paper in C-U when I left, thanking me for being open about my own beliefs, but fair to others.  That was seriously the most encouraging note I ever got.  Mission accomplished.

I think WILL is great, David Inge is great, and WDWS does a sensational job of being what it has ALWAYS been:  Over-the-fence talk about Champaign-Urbana.  That's it, folks.  It's a small market, and they do exactly what they set out to do.  You can only compete with intruding Chicago stations and satellite by being local, local, local.   You can't compete on production values, you can't compete for the same talent, you can't sound better.  You can be C-U, and, largely, they pull that off pretty well.

BTW, not only was my "stooge" producer a remarkably bright liberal, Brian Barnhart is one of the most genuine guys you'll ever meet.  Totally humble, no big ego trip.  Refreshing.  I miss him.

Brant

redstatewannabe's picture

Great to hear from you Brant. I miss you every time I turn off my radio at 2pm.

D. Boone - that thing about spending money on the war....I am pretty sure one of the duties of our national gov't is to protect the nation (I know, I know, you don't think going to Iraq does that) - I am still looking for that part in the Constitution where it is called to provide folks with good radio.

Thanks!  I just re-read my hurriedly-written comment, and the last sentence implicates Brian Barnhart as a "remarkably bright liberal."   He *is* remarkably bright, but I'm referring to two different people there.

BTW, my actual personal blog is www.branthansen.typepad.com, if anyone's ever in the mood for complete confusion, coupled with genuine dismay.

I'm glad I happened on this site by googling myself.  Seems like a cool way to keep up with the central Illinois scene.
