From Illinois activist and consultant Charlie Johnston:
If things are bad in Washington, they are even worse in Illinois. Here we have five identifiable corrosive factions of Republicans that, like roving bands of rival warlords, do little or no damage to the real opposition while engaging in incessant internecine destruction, giving any transcendent, unifying leaders little chance to emerge. We shoot survivors in their cradle.
First, there are the arsonists. You know that bunch: in 2006 they declared anyone who did not support Oberweis in the gubernatorial primary a heretic who should be burned at the stake. This year they declared that anyone who DID support Oberweis in the congressional primary was a heretic who should be burned at the stake. They don’t get excited about supporting someone and are only happy when they have someone they are committed to destroying. While priding themselves on their brutal honesty, one quickly realizes it is the brutality, not the honesty, that excites them.
Second we have the looters. They rise until they reach a point where they can use their position to enrich themselves. They consider it a successful political career if they make a mint regardless of how bad they damage the party.
Then there are the quislings, those who are busy selling out to save their hides, making ads for Obama, voting to raise taxes, always looking for a means to advance themselves at the expense of their party – the Vichy French, as it were.
Fourth we have the clueless, those lovely souls who mean well but think salvation is to be found in the next iteration of the 72-hour-program and never pause to think that maybe we ought to actually stand for something and mean it.
Finally there are what I call the diplomats of doom or the Scottish Lords. These are always looking to find a way to negotiate surrender to the Democrats before the battle begins in exchange for some crummy little perk. If the Democrats promise to take us over the cliff with taxes and spending, our GOP diplomats of doom promise to take us over that cliff only half as fast. And they wonder why the rank and file don’t rally to their flag.
I don't necessarily agree - I think there are those of us active in our local areas who don't fit into any of these five templates. But as you move up the food chain in Illinois Republican circles, it becomes increasingly to fit people and organizations into these categories.
Discuss.

It looks like to me that in Illinois, the Republicans belong to category 4, except for me, and I would be category 5 according to this CJ cat.
IP, it seems like the arsonists have been running the state party since 2003, but since their favorite love/hate candidates are now gone (Obie, Keyes, JBT) and we have no singular party leader, do you think their time is done, or will that only happen when those IFI morons finally run out of money?
I think some people get a greater sense of accomplishment from tearing things down than building something; from saying "I told you so," instead of "Let's get this done." I think that's a fair way to characterize some of the arsonists in the IL GOP, and I don't think they'll ever really go away. We need to be able to win elections in spite of them, because I think they'd be sniping at somebody/something even if held every office in the State.
Pick on the arsonists if you want, but that list of 5 only includes 2 groups that actually have convictions - the arsonists and the clueless.
IMO, the arsonists have no convictions other than exerting and proving their own power through destruction. If they had principles, they'd wouldn't have flip-flopped so badly on Oberweis, as pointed out in the comments.
And please don't think that all social conservatives are arsonists. I don't think so, and I'm sure Charlie doesn't think so. Some of the arsonsits are social conservatives, some are fiscal, some are just destructive. Being a principled social conservative in Illnois doesn't make one an arsonist. It just makes one frustrated. :-)
I didn't listen to Hastert this morning - how exactly is he proposing Illinois get the money to get the federal matching funds? Gambling expansion?
What faction do McGinty, Beckett and Wysoki belong to?
I think the District 9 Dems fall under the category of "enemies of the people" according to some folks. With a bit of help from Wiki's entry about the Great Purge, I can illuminate a bit more:
"The purge was motivated by the desire on the part of the leadership to remove dissident elements from the Party and what is often considered to have been a desire to consolidate the authority of Joseph Stalin. Additional campaigns of repression were carried out against social groups which were believed to be, or at least were accused of, acting for ulterior political motives or to have opposed the Soviet state and the politics of the Party..."
You can substitute as you see fit
They all belong in Category 4 -- clueless.
Oh, my goodness!
I don't think McGinty, Beckett and Wysocki are in the Republican Party, no matter what the dem's would like to think. I have known Charlie for a while and he isn't far off the mark but I think some look at the groups he talking about as large parts of the party, they aren’t. Unfortunately some of them have positions of power in the party and many are out for themselves.
Wow, Laura, sounds pretty awful over there on the Democrat side. I thought it was just garden-variety infighting, between (to use the main article's language) Dem "quislings" and "arsonists". I had no idea it was a full-blown Stalinist purge!
Just one question -- who exactly got purged? Was it Beckett, Chair of Facilities? McGinty, Chair of Finance? Or maybe Wysocki, Chair of ELUC? Were you purged from the Board of Review? Was Julia Rietz purged by the 82% of primary voters who backed her?
First, we hear about the worst abuse of political power since the Russian Revolution, and now we hear about Stalinist purges. How can the local Republicans compete?
"First, we hear about the worst abuse of political power since the Russian Revolution, and now we hear about Stalinist purges. How can the local Republicans compete?"
You can't. Nyet. Not even close. Surrender now, or we will bury you.
:-)
Stalinist note to self: Assure complete dictatorship prior to atempting the next purge...
: )
Laura
Is that you Kevin? :-)
HG
"Is that you Kevin? :-)"
Yes, it's true. I am the reason for the sign on the front door of the UN that reads "No Shoes, No Class, No Service"
