I know that AT&T's U-Verse video service hasn't gotten great reviews. But at this point, I'm desperate for any sort of competition for local cable monopolies.
AT&T plans to install 100 utility cabinets throughout the city to bring video services to many residents.
The telephone giant has already obtained city permits to install 33 of the cabinets, which will link new fiber optic cable with traditional copper telephone wire to provide video services similar to those of cable television.
"I think they're doing installation right now," said Deputy City Attorney Trisha Crowley. She was unable to say when AT&T would begin offering video services.

What are these not-so-great reviews? I've got the U-Verse down here in StL and am pretty happy with it.
In most markets AT&T is forcing U-Verse customers to buy a TV package to get broadband Internet. Since they don't offer DSL in Urbana, I hope they offer U-Verse with an Internet-only package...this would give satellite TV subscribers an alternative to Comcast for broadband Internet. U-Verse in Chicago carries the Big Ten Network, so presumably they'll carry it here, too...which will be a welcome kick in the ass to Comcast.
AT&T does offer DSL in Urbana. I am using it now. They may not cover ALL of Urbana, but the blanket statement is not accurate.
I have AT&T DSL in Urbana. It works great.
Unsurprisingly, Champaign was chosen over Urbana

It's called IPTV, and what they're installing is dslams. Soon, Microsoft will slither in through AT&T copper and nibble on your wallet.
I would like to see competition for (now) comcast. I had DSL for two years. Yes, it was an improvement over dial-up but the speed does not even come within 10% of cable at almost the same cost.
I have DSL at home and DISH for my television service and they both work pretty well. I did have internet through Insight and I find my DSL service provides a very competitive quality in regards to service.
"It's called IPTV, and what they're installing is dslams."
If they are installing DSLAMs in Urbana, does that mean they'll be able to offer DSL east of Race Street?
These dslams are for IPTV.
Is IPTV realted to UPTV ??
