At some point we have to trust the government. - redstatewannabe on 2008-06-12 at 1:14pm

So which is dumber, a windfall profits tax or temporary repeal of the tax on gas actually believing that it would lower the price of gas.

Can someone please explain the Father's Day cartoon to me?  I feel like I'm missing something there...

(From my vantage point, it appears a white man is carrying an African-American girl on his shoulders.  Are they trying to advocate for interracial adoption, or are they just saying love should be blind to the color of the child's skin?)

John Farney's picture

I just see a father and his child - - no special meaning. Just a very lucky person to have a child to love. Happy Father's Day to all the Dad's out there. If your are fortunate enough to have your father still living, be sure to let him know how much you appreciate him. I'd give anything to have that chance again (sorry to bring down the Friday Funnies, but that's just how I feel today).

It's okay, John, my father passed on in May from pneumonia and I am trying to figure out if it would be better to go down to the cemetary on Sat. or Sun.  Been a little down myself today.

I would say raising the price of gas with a tax would be pretty stupid while gas prices are sky rocking would be crazy everything we buy moves by truck now and prices for food and everything we buy has increased and will. The idea of lowering taxes on gas has been attacked as dumb and some people only drive a little but others drive much more often for there jobs or to get to work and have no choice. Others who have little income can't really afford to be sending money to the government just because some think 30 dollars isn't allot of money, to some it groceries. I thought when other states lowered the tax it lower the price, or help moderate the price.

I repeat my urging one more time to go to listen to the Senate hearings on C-SPAN about the oil price and oil resources topic to learn how oil prices could be brought down tomorrow if there is public will and intent. These discussions have not even touched on the gouging, the reason for it, and how it can be contained.

If you can't laugh at yourself... let others do it.

The Story of Glock vs. Wasp (rated PG-13 for harsh language):

A tale of sheer terror... but mostly embarrassment.

On the Father's Day image, I didn't notice any differences in skin color until someone else pointed it out.  I had to take a second look to confirm it.

Yet, I'm one of those who is to be despised because I cling to guns and religion.

cheesy poofs's picture

Sad commentary on the state of our society when someone can look at a cartoon like that and see race.

You're not despised, we take pity on you because you're too busy clinging to that instead of reality.

I don't cling to anything I find my faith and those in it (not meant to be just in the church I attend) a great blessing, support and help. Guns are both a tool for protection, competition, fun and their ownership a Constitutional Right. I believe Obama said what he meant and it shows both that like you Arvid he neither understands me nor cares about my rights or the rights of 10's of millions of people like me or just feels like he really doesn't have too or is it he is the elitists they say he is? Of course what you think really doesn’t matter but as President with Durbin, Pelosi and the rest of the gun grabbers in congress in charge the 2nd amendment and free speech rights for churches are threatened with Obama as President.

I'm not aware of Obama saying anyone should be "despised" for anything. The fact that you keep bringing up that particular phrase makes it seem like you're a bit bitter about it, though. Oh oops, "bitter" is another of the verboten words.

I would say raising the price of gas with a tax would be pretty stupid while gas prices are sky rocking would be crazy everything we buy moves by truck now and prices for food and everything we buy has increased and will. Well, as someone who has to commute a ways to work, I would say that I've looked at enough economic models to see that giving the tax reprieve will lead to a spike in demand with no additional supply and would likely be met with expedient hikes to similar per gallon rates.

This is a piece of policy analysis that I think Obama clearly outshined both Clinton and McCain on.

Note: Not approving a temporary repreive is not the same as adding a tax. In fact, it's the opposite. Attempting to artificially depress the current price by taking away a tax is pretty similar to artificially adding a tax and about as meaningless.

will lead to a spike -- A spike hardly. It's a slight tax cut the price is so high now people won't stop trying to control their use. This is a piece of policy analysis that I think Obama clearly outshined both Clinton and McCain on.-Obama did nothing. Kucinich was talking about a 100% tax on profits would that be a problem for consumers? You of course know the oil companies will just pass on that tax increase. How do you think the oil companies will increase future production and exploration if they make no money to pay for it? How much will this add to the cost of all the product and service of those companies that have to use oil products in their businesses to consumers? Especially since this tax is just to get back at the big mean old oil companies for making money, how horrible for a company in a free market economy. You know there are companies that make greater profits then oil companies. Guess what if 20 or 30% is too much to take how about tax rates add up all the taxes I pay and I pay more then that lets fire all those people and start all over. No businesses, the economy and all of us are in big trouble if these clowns start down this road.

Guess who makes more $$ on a gallon of gas than the oil companies?? THE GOVERNMENT! and all they do is tax it! I saw Dick Durbin on TV, but I didn't hear Him whining about that!

Taxes should be for needed programs not to punish companies because you don't like them. "Needed" is really hard to define.

I too didn't notice the skin tone differences on the Father's Day cartoon.

Glock-- I once locked myself in my bedroom with the baby until my husband came home because of a wasp.He still teases me about it. I have gotten braver (and I keep a can of wasp spray on the fridge.) They are vicious creatures.

Winning the Slut Vote:

The election just keeps getting weirder. The ads are starting to look like beer commercials... guy using brand X loses the girl, guy using brand A wins the girl... psychological marketing: our product will get you laid, the other guy's product will make you a loser.

And I thought the bumper-sticker mentality was bad... sheesh.
