Firefox 3 Released

Firefox 3 has been released today, and it's free and open-source and the good folks that make it are trying to set a some sort of record for downloads.

Please do them (and yourself) a favor and go download, install, and start using it - Firefox is the browser preferred by smart, good-looking people, and this version seems significantly faster than the earlier version.

I stopped using Firefox because the base & composite radar loops off the NWS website locked it up.  Does Firefox 3 fix that?

its always a good idea to have IE available since some websites developed with Microsoft proprietary tools will not display or function properly with Firefox.

IE blows. I refuse to use it. Downloaded Firefox 3. Works pretty well.

So Glock is smart and I'm good looking. Where do you fit in, Gordy? "Significantly faster"?

I just tried the NWS radars you mentioned, and after the java script loaded (which took a while) the radar loops came up ok.  I've rarely had a problem with Firefox locking up or refusing to load a page; invariably, it's something wrong with the page or server, not my browser.  Firefox has an add-on for weather, and I enjoy using it.  The information is as good as anywhere else I've found.

I'm a fat drunk. What sort of browser should I use?

:-) %

I tried FF3.0 and it does not work with my bank, SURS, or several other websites. I like FireFox, but they have NOT done their homework

does not slice or dice, does not have 1001 uses

"I'm a fat drunk. What sort of browser should I use?"

Definitely Internet Explorer.

"I tried FF3.0 and it does not work with my bank, SURS, or several other websites. I like FireFox, but they have NOT done their homework"

More likely your bank, SURS and the other websites are programmed poorly, given that they're neglecting about 20 percent of the browser market.

And I've not found a single site yet that doesn't work in FF3.  Even Busey's craptastic online banking site works.  Which sites are giving you problems?

I'm still using Firefox 2.0.0.4, but I didn't have any problems logging into and navigating around the SURS site.

Ok, I downloaded and installed Firefox 3 and still had no problem logging into and navigating the SURS website.

It sounds like Anon 7:47 may have encountered operator error.

Thanks HG, I found that they worked in FF on my XP box but not on my Vista box, I should have researched it more before I spoke. I added Java to the Vista box and now FF works fine and I can go back to it.  The weather add-on you suggested is also very useful.

I see a problem trending with commenters here.

They use Windows machines.

FF is ok, I downloaded 3.0, but Mozilla's Camino for Mac is much faster, more stable, more secure, and "captures" logins and passwords from the keychains, so it's really easy logging on to sites.

I've actually been thinking about making my next laptop a Mac.  I don't really play PC games any more, and much of the application work I do is "in the cloud" rather than machine-software-specific, and supposedly the new Mac OS supports Exchange, which would be a requirement of my office.

Am I crazy?

I use a MacBook Pro for work and like it.

Office for Mac has had Exchange support for quite some time now (Entourage is used instead of Outlook).  I've been using it consistently since Office 2004 came out, and I'm fond of it.

The new Mac OS X supports MobileMe, which gives Exchange-like features (Syncing of calendars, mail and contacts across multiple devices) without actually having Exchange.

FF3 Rocks, it's a speed demon compared to the last version, its's Vista that blows.. I am a Mac user, and don't have first hand experience with PCs, but my customers do, and I am seeing more and more Macs.

Yes, FF3 is great. I also like to plug the All-in-one Gestures extension which is so incredibly useful that I almost can't function in a browser without it anymore.

FF3 question:  Is it possible to change the icon to the left of text for a bookmark?  When I save Illinipundit.com as a bookmark, the IP logo is the graphic to the left of the text.  Now, after going to a computer gaming site, their icon (previously a blank rectangle) is the IP logo.  And it's just...annoying...   *shrugs*  Any ideas?

Odd.

Maybe if you do a hard refresh (CRTL-F5) on the computer gaming site, it will load their logo (called a "favicon") instead of mine.

I've been using FF for several years, and use nothing else unless I'm testing a new site. The only problem I encountered was with my extensons. eight out of eleven of them hadn't been updated for FF3 and would no longer function, so I had to uninstall and reinstall FF2.

Eh, looks like i'm out of luck.  I tried your suggestion twice IP, even going so far as to delete both bookmarks (yours and the gaming site), and re-book-marking them.  Same annoyance.  Oh, well, thanks anyways...

I have both a mac & a dell, laptop & desktop respectfully.  This works the best for me as a non-gamer since I find the mac laptops always ahead of everyone but their desktops are not flexible and costly.  Firefox 3 works great as did all the previously versions with no problems except those related to the "cheap" programs/services like Busey's online banking.  My son reports no problems with SURS and neither of us have any problems with UIECU online or Busey's Busted Bill Payer.

MS leaves all kinds of software crap in their programs which leads to many, many interface issues.  Most troublesome is between gmail (a good free email service with unlimited capacity) and MS Outlook.
