Soccer viewing in C-U

OK, IP has already stated he doesn't much care for soccer, so I will hope for info from other readers here.

Is there a good place in town to watch a soccer game, a place where the serious fans show up (and where I can get lunch at the same time)?  I have tried Guidos and Buffalo Wild Wings, and each had the radio on and TV volume down.  I want to go somewhere tomorrow to watch Russia v Spain and really enjoy myself.  Any ideas?

Go to Havana, Commie, and watch your litte euro kickball games there.

No, I didn't write this.  ;-)

Find a worthwhile sport to watch. ;-)  Ever heard of something called "The National Passtime"?

You might try the Esquire, I think they have some soccer followers. Lord knows they have enough screens.  :-)

How ironic, that I would be called a Commie :-)

I guess I did say that sometimes you have to trust the government -  I must be sliding down a very slippery slope.

I spit water out of my nose when I read this.

I asked a German co-worker and he suggested the U of I's Illini Union as the most likely place to find serious soccer fans watching the game (mostly international students stuck here for the summer). Of course, if you want a beverage with your game, you'll be on your own.

I was at the Union the other day and a soccer game was on all the TVs in the indoor courtyard with the volume up and a full house of soccer fans.

They have all kinds of soccer stuff up on the walls at El Toro on Neil. I'm guessing they would *love* to have some fellow soccer enthusiasts in their bar.

Legends and Murphy's sometimes will have the soccer games on or will agree to put the channel on if there are enough enthusiasts asking for it.  Too bad Turkey didn't make it this time.

Spain and Germany on Sunday for the title.  Should be a good one!  Spain sure is fun to watch.

RSW- Did you find a good spot today?

redstatewannabe's picture

I went to the Esquire.  About 6 of us were watching - not exactly like a bar crowd watching an Illini game.  The beer and peanuts were good though.

Germany v Spain will be good Sunday.  Look for the Germans to strike thru the air - a corner kick header might decide the game.  (I hate games decided on PK's)

...The pansies on the field prancin' around in their little shorty-shorts huggin' their buds, the moron yelling "gooooooaaaaaal" (fortunately he only gets to do this once or twice a game), and the churlish drunken oafs masquerading as fans...certainly somebody could find something about this wretched excuse for a game that's responsible in some part for global warming, and warrant banning it world-wide.

I am not a soccer fan, but I hear the Esquire crowd is growing, have I heard wrong?

Soccer is a beautiful game--it's got the easy to get started/hard to master thing going for it. It's all-world from the little toddler on up.

That being said, I'll echo what others have said: I'll never follow it seriously until they drop the PKs. I don't understand why they don't just have infinite sudden-death OT. Sure, players would eventually drop, but then that team loses...

I don't like to see a game come down to PKs either and would also support changing the two extra periods to sudden death.  That being said, I think PKs are an integral part of the game.  They are sudden, brutal, and final, but so is the world.

I love that part - it is so fun :-)  You also get to hear the commentators say "bulging the ole' onion bag" - awesome!

The Sunday game was disappointing (for a Germany fan) - but it was a good goal by Torres.  The German 'air assault' never did get going.

I cannot for the life of me figure out why soccer matches can be broadcast commercial free, but nascar races cannot.

Because soccer doesn't have a certain number of product placements for sponsors that must happen?  Also, the commercials in nascar are supposed to give you time to open a new case of Keystone?

If soccer ever got really popular in America, the TV folks would figure something out.  Maybe it would all go to PPV - maybe split screen (which I have seen some in NASCAR).
