At the risk of parrotting every WDWS story today (why doesn't WDWS put their stories - at least headlines - online again?), they are reporting that Urbana Mayor Laurel Prussing will appoint David Gehrig to the Aldermanic seat vacated by Danielle Chynoweth, who resigned a few weeks ago.
Googling "David Gehrig Urbana" leads to some interesting results, one of which contains a little bit of biography:
David is Acorn's Secretary and a training coordinator for the GRIDS Center, a project of the National Science Foundation Middleware Initiative. He has been at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications since 2001, including three years as part of the NEESgrid project applying grid technology to civil engineering research for studying the effects of earthquakes. He has a degree in computer science from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
Good luck to Mr. Gehrig. I believe this seat will be on the ballot in the 2009 municipal elections, for whatever it's worth.
UPDATE: I think Mr. Gehrig is also on the NCSA staff, and is a site administrator at UCIMC.org.

based on that bio, he seems like a perfect replacement for Danielle

You are correct. Googling "gehrig indymedia" also leads to some interesting results.
Yah, gehrig has been fighting trolls on indymedia for years.
There's now a N-G story up: http://www.news-gazette.com/news/local/2008/07/28/prussing_nominates_gehrig_to_urbana_city_council_seat
Oh great, that guy. He was an insufferable ass on IMC, second only to ML when it came to hiding and/or deleting anyone he didn't agree with. I hope he knows that won't work outside of cyberspace.
Care to back that up with some links, anon?

JC...Rex Bradfield throws out a phony story, now everyone's credibility is called into question :)
Here's just the beginning on why Gehrig is an insufferable ass

Ask Wayward, she can fill you in on more. I'm tired and going to bed.
Golly gee, anon, that's compelling evidence....
Like him or not, he's apparently the only one who applied.
To be honest, I've been more struck by the sheer amount of time and energy he seems to spend squabbling with other people than anything he fights about. The exchanges between him and David Green make me appreciate the N-G's limits on letters to the editor. There are also apparently some feuds between him and people at some of the other IMCs, e.g.

On the positive side, this made me step back and think about my own life and what was important to me. I realized that there were many things I enjoyed doing, and getting into extended flamewars with people wasn't one of them. So I decided to focus more on what I did like than what I didn't.
wayward,
While I am not a fan of UCIMC, or IMCs anywhere due to their inherent level of moonbattery, I wholeheartedly applaud the time and effort David Gehrig put into calling a spade a spade in his arguments with those who support or defend Holocaust deniers.
Those who choose to deny this hideous era in the human record are simply the lowest of the low.
I have a box (passed down to me from my grandfather, who was there) of original photos taken by the GIs who liberated Dachau. If you're a denier and you want proof of this event, drop me line and I'll be happy to show you the pictures, right before I beat you to a senseless, shapeless pulp.
Congratulations on your appointment, Mr. Gehrig.
Thanks, but I don't support Holocaust deniers either. My grandfather also served in WWII and some of the other troops in his battalion wrote about their experiences liberating the camps. My point is that Holocaust denial has already been discredited so it seems like a dead (or terminally ill) horse. Can you name any well-respected scholars with this point of view? I can't. Sure, there are people out there who believe lots of dumb, offensive, and generally nutty things, but spending lots of time arguing with them makes no sense to me. Why engage with them at all?

why, that's just how i feel on this site sometimes :)

Heh. It doesn't seem like there's much point to getting into flamewars, though - being rude or condescending generally doesn't persuade people. For example, the IMC articles (linked to above) have lots of lengthy comments, but they all end at an impasse and nothing changes. It works the same way here and elsewhere. The most abrasive posts might get reactions, but they don't engender respect. So why bother?
He recognizes the holocaust yet denies God in the recent creationist dialogue in the Gazette, an avenue he seems to have "at will" access to.
Um, are those remotely comparable?

I think this wins the award for most premature threat of physical violence, since nothing ever in any way suggested wayward denied the Holocaust. Although I sure do love me a premature threat of physical violence.

The Gehrig/Indymedia situation seemed to be pretty convoluted, though I admittedly only skimmed the threads I linked to and didn't really expect anyone else to spend much time plowing through them. From what I pieced together, it didn't look like the other IMC had any Holocaust denial stuff up on their site - the argument was about them having material posted on their website written by people who'd been accused of saying anti-Semitic things elsewhere. FWIW, the ADL has some well-written material on Holocaust denial at http://www.adl.org/holocaust/introduction.asp .
I almost encouraged PB to take his threats over to a site like Stormfront.org . He could try arguing with the folks over there, but it'd probably be more fun and productive to spend the time banging his head against a brick wall.

The News-Gazette is finally going to resolve the long-standing question of the existence of God? It's about time!
