Budget Cuts and DCFS

With all of the bipartisan focus on how well Sarah and Bristol can be mothers, and all of the activism involved with Kickapoo State Park, I'm surprised how little outrage there's been over the announced cuts to DCFS.

Blagojevich used his line item veto to cut $70m from DCFS. Among the impacts:

  • Elimination of mental healthcare for abused and neglected foster children
  • Laying off 179 staffers
  • Overburdening an already overburdened system by increasing caseworkers' workloads
  • I'm a lifelong outdoorsman, an avid backpacker, a fisherman, and a cyclist. I love Kickapoo - I spent much of my youth there. I hate the idea of closing it.

But I'm really stunned by how little people have discussed the cuts to DCFS, a state service far more essential than DNR. There's no doubt in my mind that these cuts will adversely affect more children than Palin's candidacy.

We delegated our interests to corrupt chicago machine politics.  We, the people of Illinois, blew the last opportunity to have our interests considered.  Got another couple years to go to try to fix that mistake.  In the mean time I'd really like to prevent that Tammeny Hall to have its prodigy in the White House.

The DCFS cuts are outrageous.  But don't worry, I'm sure it'll mostly be cut back south of I-80.  sigh...

Remember when the Extension Service and 4-H were going to be shut down?

I suspect our smarmy little governor is brewing up some sort of terrible deal to return his latest round of proposed cutbacks to their proper place in our state budget.  (Why else would he attack Lincoln sites just before the Lincoln birthday bicentennial, when the tourists are due?)

Unfortunately, I just don't know what the hairball is planning this time...
