Chris Employer

My name is Chris Employer and I own a small business that currently employs 20 people.

My business is such that I can setup shop pretty much anywhere.   We've launched successfully, but now I'm seeking  a long-term home.

Recently, we've had breakthrough in the company and we expect that we will likely grow to total payroll of about $10,000,000.

I've been looking at a few places, preferably small metros in/around college towns, and I currently have a few favorites:

Bloomington, IN, Lafayette, IN, Columbia, MO, Iowa City, IA, Urbana IL and Champaign, IL.

I'm a bit partial to the Urbana, IL because (a) I graduated from UI Urbana-Champaign, (b) grew up one block from Roger Ebert's childhood home, and (c)  I'd love to be within bicycling distance of family.   Can you know-it-alls please confirm that I  should move my business to  Urbana?

Your help would be most appreciated.   We anticipate  a long and prosperous relationship with our chosen community.

Best Regards,

Chris Employer

Because you would get to regularly read Mr. Fuerst's letters to the editor!

B is for Business's picture

Because you would be located in a Nuclear Free Zone if you live in Urbana.

Can we look forward to some kind of relationship between Chris and Brenda?

Indiana, Iowa & Missouri all have or will have shortly lower taxes, less corrupt state government and better business climates than Illinois.  If good future employees ranks high enough you might be able to justify the extra cost and overlook the pitiful Illinois state government.  I base that on my experience in CU with the U of I and Parkland, giving a clear advantage over IU, Prudue, Missu or Iowa.  Chosing between the cities will depend if you are building or leasing.  No difference in the latter but Champaign is slighty easier to build in than Urbana.  Biking is steadily getting better in both cities with the ability to get between the two improving the further from city centers you are with exceptions for the most of the interstate crossings.

And come January 1st, you'll have the pleasure of paying another 1% in sales tax.
